Traditions Hawken .54
« on: December 01, 2012, 04:25:15 PM »
Picked up a Traditions .54 Hawken this week for $50.00.  It needs a little TLC but overall in excellent shape.  Hope to be able to shoot it this weekend.   Have not put the bore light down the barrel but there was a little surface rust.  Has cleaned up good.  This one is lighter in weight than my TC in .54 and if she will shoot then I will hunt with it later this year.

Ran 10 patched round balls thru it today.  8 of them at 60 grains of FFg and 2 at 85 grains of FFg.  Stock is a little long for me but that will be a weekend project.  Accuracy, at that distance and open sights I had several cloverleafs.  Yep, I am happy.  Due to the much lighter weight in comparison to my TC Hawken in .54 I will be hunting with this baby next year.  Will probably strip the stock down and refinish when I shorten the stock.  May consider going with a flat butt plate rather than the curved brass.  With the little surface rust I am thinking about stripping it down and browning the barrel, or wait till retirement and due it then.

Everything I read says its 1 in 48, same as my TC Hawken and it shoots 3 inch groups at 80 yrds with iron sights.  I am expecting similar from the Traditions.  Rifling seems rough when I load but the patches are not showing any cuts.  It had a lot of surface rust in the barrel but I used a fiber pad on the end of a screw attached to my cleaning rod and scrubbed and flushed several times, dropped the bore light down the barrel and it looks good.  Was a little more difficult at cleaning but I feel like this will smooth out after 50 rounds down the barrel.  Must say, I am happy.  I know the guy and he wanted room in his safe and had not shot it in several years, so I helped him out.... ;D ;D

21 years ago today my wife surprised me with a Traditions Hawken in .54 cal.  I still hunt with it, same load of 2F Goex, 85 grains, with patched roundball.  Never put it on paper.  Being the first day of muzzleloading season, and wanting to hunt with it, I took a target to the farm I hunted on.  Set up the target, loaded the rifle, took a good look at the background. I cocked the rifle, took coarse aim and pulled the set trigger.  At that exact moment a fat doe stepped out of the woods and stood smelling my target...she went 30 feet.  First shot was first blood.  For economically priced rifles, they are surprisingly accurate, and durable.
