Ahlman's for warranty work?
« on: December 02, 2012, 09:51:54 AM »
So I called to get a RA number to send my 25-06 in for the loose barrel. Told them I wanted to send it to Brian @ Ilion.
They said an email will arrive shortly with instructions and shipping info.
The email arrived, they want me to send it to Ahlmans in MN instead of Ilion.
I replied to the email the stuff came from, and also PM'd Brian56, but haven't heard from either.
Anyone have experience with Ahlmans for warranty work? Can they really fix a loose barrel there?

Depends on why it's loose, if it just needs a new latch, they can do that, there are three different length latches that can tighten lockup if that's why it's loose, if not and it needs a new barrel they'll send it on to Ilion, that's what has happened in the past IIRC when the outsourced repair facility couldn't make the repar.

I had sent a .270 handi to them and he admittingly had not done a lot of Handi work but they were very helpful and decent to work with. There was no fix for my gun. Checked headspace and sent it back.... But he said something to the effect about not working on many.... Not an exact quote but it is what was stated and my gun came back still hard to open after firing.... ?   I would have Brian work on it if at all possible.  Ahlmans was nice BUT Brian always works on Handis and he knows. Just my though after my experience. ( I did not know Brian before I sold the .270)

They are located about 10 miles up the road from me. They are the "go to" gun place around here. I can honestly say I have never heard a negative comment about the store or their gunsmiths.

I  personally, have never had an experience with the smiths though. I would not hesitate to let them work on any problem I had with a gun. The shop has been in business nearly 70 years, they have a website you could check out to maybe get a feel about them.

That's all the "feel" I'd need to make a decision!  ;D

He said they are fine for regular stuff, broken parts etc, but they would just end up sending the loose barrel to Ilion anyway.
The issued me a revised SR, It left to Brians capable hands today :).
They only twist was, I got the paper work early in the AM, so I boxed her up and sent it off via UPS this afternoon. Came back
in the house after a serious casting session and found a prepaid shipping label in my email inbox- after I paid the 24 bucks to ship it
like 6 hours after the original email :(

That's a shame, CS issues return shipping call tags all the time, puts the cost on them like it should be when they make a production error and don't catch it.  :-\
