30-06 WIN Brass grew 0.05 in on first firing. Is that normal?
« on: December 02, 2012, 02:50:38 PM »
50 rounds of ammo = 130 gn SP over 51 gn of Varget in new 30-06 WIN brass and WIN L/R primers
grew 0.05 inches on first firing in a rifle within proper headspace tolerance.

It was fairly accurate, and I may not  push it any harder.

Is this excessive growth for new brass?  It showed no signs of
any reloading issues. I don't have a good feel for what is normal
growth on new brass.

did you misplace the decimal place?  .05 - 50 thousandths would be way excessive, don't think it's hardly possible in the confines of a correct chamber.  .005 5 thousandths would be in the normal/not surprising range.

Oops!  I misread my Lyman dial caliper.  0.005 was what I meant to write.

That's about normal for a first firing.

Normal?  Did you measure that growth before or after resizing?   Most such growth occurs during FL sizing, not firing, and it's generally due to excessive resizing when it does happen.
