ATI Stocks for a Handi
« on: December 03, 2012, 05:05:56 AM »
My son loves hold the AR's every time we are at the gun shop, but I'm not buying the 13 year old one! Anyway, as a consulation I'm thinking about getting him one of these ATI stocks for his 44 mag handi. I've already put a red dot on it for Christmas last year and it would be "fitting" as a single shot tactical rifle can be. What I want to know is, will they hold up being drug around the woods? Or are the flemsy plastic junk? They are only $50.00 so I don't expect them to be as rigid as steel, but I do expect it to hold up to normal hunting use and not malfunction while the meat is on the line...

PLEASE PLEASE DO NOT BUY THIS FOR ANY HAND THAT HAS RECOIL ABOVE A 223!!!

Sorry for the shouting, but this goes double if you have a scope. These stocks have been collapsing under recoil and we even had one member badly hurt when his scope entered his eye socket!

This question comes up allot and its too bad they don't make a better product. But they don't.

Thanks CW,

I wasn't going to put it on a kicker and the red dot certainly wouldn't be an issue, but I don't want to waste my money on something he can break either.

Anybody else have experience with these?

I often wounder if the stock broke or if that large, very easy to push lever that controls the stock got pushed and allowed them to collapse and cause the injury.

IIRC the latch failed under recoil and collapsed causing rapid impact of the scope and his head.

I had one on my 44 Mag for a while.  I shot a couple hundred 240gr near max loads of H110 without any problems. I wonder if this was another case of the suddenly accelerating car?

Always a possibility.

This guy getting Hirt was a member here. But if you search online many more failures will come up. I searched that was back a couple years ago when this happened and that's what I found .

It has been suggested on here before to pin the stock so it can't collapse. Set the length of pull you need, drill through the butt and the tube it slides in and pin/bolt it together to keep it from failing.
I'd rather just buy the cheaper compact stock made by Choate's and never worry.

The problem with these M4-style stocks is that the adjustment latch is so exposed.  Guys scope their rifles and then settle down on a bench not realizing their rest/sandbags are pressing on the release - ouch!
Personally, I would be OK using one of these stocks with a red dot or a peep - so eye relief is not a critical issue.  BTW, they are too straight (high comb) to use with a plain shotgun barrel - you cannot get your cheek low enough.

ATI = "Approved To Incinerate!"
Threw them in the trash (literally).
Buy the Choate product... the quality is like "night and day" over the ATI injection molded products... The ATI laminated wood products are quite nice though.

I have one that is on a 357 Handi that my six year old shoots. It looks and feels cheap, but has served the purpose of getting him a very short LOP. When deer season is over I plan to either cut off a pallet wood stock for him or get him a different gun. As far as holding up it has so far, but at his age his shooting is highly supervised so the rifle does not get much abuse.

He started with a red dot on it and now has moved to a scope. Reading about these stocks collapsing makes me want to get rid of it even more. At least he shoots with the stock only one stop out from fully collapsed  now so there is not a lot of room for it to come back, but I expect that to change this year.

I bought one for my nephew's .223 superlight, a few years back.  It worked great. I was able to shorten the length of pull and adjust it as he grew. As someone said previously, they don't collapse unless you are shooting from a bench and you press the release lever on the bags.  Go ahead and buy one, you won't be sorry.

I got one on a rifle, I did not like the large release latch so I cut it off very small about 1   1/4" long total length. It still works quite easily but is close to the stock tube and does not get released unless I want it released. I also think it looks much nicer without that large lever. I still would not mount it on a heavy recoil rifle as you can't give scope eye back it has a no return policy but is fully guaranteed to hurt like H--l

Never seen one so I dont know, but just thinking out loud here.......can a length of dowel be fit into the tube to keep it at length with no collapse possible?

Does anyone that have one of these know if they are the standard mil-spec size tube or even commercial size tube, or are they a proprietary size? Its almost worth the money if I could put a Magpul stock on it instead of their cheap one. Also is the pistol grip removable/interchangable with a standard one?

The ATI tube is about 1.18 dia My car. AR 15 tube is 1.14 dia.  All dimentions on the ATI are just little larger and no my AR stock will not fit on the ATI tube

Thanks for the reply, commercial spec is about 1.17, any chance that is it? I might buy one and just give it a shot with a Magpul stock.  Might be able to make a nice backpack gun with one.

I've got an ATI stock awaiting the receiver getting its .223 HBAR barrel. Would like to see how that turns out.

I agree with hoytcanon and others.  To me they're junk.  I had one on a 17HMR for about ten minutes.  If you like something that doesn't balance at all and feels like a kids toy.....go for it.

The rifle I took the measurement from is a Colt CAR ar15 made in early 70's. The butt measures 1.1485" inside dia round. This is a mil spec rifle. And yes I have a very accurate mic.
The inside dia of the ATI but stock id 1.1950" and is a snug fit tighter that the car 15
