2 questions
« on: December 03, 2012, 08:22:02 AM »
First, is there any custom slug gun barrel makers out there, I would love to have a 3" chamber, 870 20ga, full rifled, fluted!

Second, a few years ago I found a magazine at the super market that was dedicated to slug guns, I cannot remember the name of it, want to say it was simply "slug gun" any one have any ideas?

Thanks,
Nathan

I suspect that fluting a slug gun barrel is pretty tough unless you start out with a lot heavier barrel than needed.  Shotgun pressures are low enough that there's not much meat to flute on an 870 barrel.

If you are looking to make an 870 into a dedicated tack driver you could to a lot worse than contact Dave Klotz of Da-Mar Gunsmiths in Weedsport, NY.  Dave has a national reputation for making slug guns drive tacks.  Brownells carries some of the stuff he's developed and patented.  His pricing is very reasonable.

If you want an 870 slug gun there is alot more than adding a bbl if you want it accurate. One thing is the reciver and bbl. need to be attached solid . No more removing the bbl. Many seeking a tack driver start with a Browning bolt action shotgun adding a bbl .Others start with a Savage.
For imformation check out Tar Hunt on the web. It not only list their products but also how to shoot a slug gun and how to choose ammo. Worth the read.  I have a stock Savage 210 slug gun and It is very accurate . and affordable. If I were getting one today I would try their 20 ga gun.
If ya can see it ya can hit it !

I have been a 870 fan since I could shoulder one duck hunting as a boy with my family. Later with LE training I staked my life on one. Today I own about 8 in different gauges and styles. Suffice to say if My 870 cannot do what I need a shot gun for I do not need a shotgun...

Having said that... One day about ten years back I was at the range with my 300+$ cantaliver rifled slug barrel. I shooting 4" groups with two different premium slugs. Looking down the range a guy was shooting a H&R with a axle tube diameter barrel! It was a Ultra Slug 12 ga and the flippin thing was shooting slugs I to one ragged hole out at 75 & 100 yards!! He let me shoot a couple and it did the same for me!!
I left the range, drove directly to my LGS and ordered a USH anyway I could get it! It came a couple days later. I installed the scope off that cantilever barrel and went to the range. My gun shoots every bit as good as his did. Literally one ragged hole at 100 yards. And all for a cost of less than 300!!

Take a look at one. Like I say is am about a staunch a 870 supporter as your gonna find but that USH will FOREVER meet my needs as a slug gun!

Dr  Slug is the most accurate 870 I know of the man is a honest ole time man who wont send bad work out his shop. I have used his services a couple of times.  Pinning the barrel is the key . His scope mount is bomb proof.  www.damargunsmiths.com

You won't need any followups..   Besides, a single shot shotgun isn't that much slower to reload for the coupe' de gras shot..  When I hunt in shotgun only areas ..I use an H&R 20 ga.
