I'm torn between the 2. I'm thinking I'll be getting the .20 cal, but I would like opinions on the .20 or .22. I like the R1, but I also like the idea of more power and the gas spring of the RX-2, but I don't know if I'll like the laminated stock. Any advice?? Anyone know of any RX-1 s out there?

First let me ask you what do you want to do with this rifle? Target, small game hunting, pest control or what? If it's a combination of these then go with the .20. Speed, trajectory and accuracy of the .177 with the hitting power of the .22. Best of both worlds. One thing to keep in mind is the gas spring(RX model) doesn't take a set like a springer can. I prefer the gas spring myself for all the reasons you stated. Me, I would pick the RX over the R. Lawdog

I do everything with my air rifle. Hunting and plinking mostly. I am leaning real hard toward the RX-2 in .20. I saw a good pic on straight shooter website and the RX-2 looks pretty nice. I'll probably order soon. I already have my scope for it. I got a 3-9 power Burris RA. I guess I have the cart before the horse. Thanks for the info. This is a great website!

That's easy for me. I have MANY R-1s and only one RX-2, a .22.

I would DEFINITELY get the R-1 .22. For one thing, it's lighter. My RX-2 with a Leupold VX-II 4-12AO and Beeman 5030M mounts weighs in at 11.25lbs!! It's a HOSS! An R-1 is a good pound PLUS lighter. You can tell it too. The R-1 is easier to cock also. Although neither is too much for most of us to cock, at the end of the day you CAN tell which one you've been shooting. Another this the gas ram/gas spring guns are guilty of: velocity varies according to outside temperature. My RX-2, SLR-98/Dual Mag all shoot at their highest velocity at around 80-90 degrees. In 90 degree heat my RX-2 shoots Beeman FTS at 811fps. At 45-50 degrees it shoots 755fps. That IS enough for impact changes at 35-40 yards. Spring guns tend to like cool days but don't vary as much.

If you are dead set on getting an RX-2, you might as well get the .22. They are going to weigh the same. And if you're going to carry it around you might as well carry the most horsepower available. Also, .22 caliber pellets are available at just about anywhere .177s are.

If you're dead set on a .20, then the R-1 Carbine .20 is THE one. Lighter weight and a faster handling package. My .20 R-1 carbine gives up very little in terms of power to the RX-2 .20 but it does weigh about 1.5lbs less than the RX-2 and handles much better.

Now I'm really confused. I never heard of the temperature variance for gas spring air rifles. Has anyone else found this to be true? I like the idea of a .22, but I like the velocity of the .20. How much more pellet drop will I have a 50 yards with the .22. I plan on shooting a heavier pellet like the crow magnum.

While I don't have an RX I do have a Crow Magnum IV(another gas spring type). I have never experienced any velocity loss due to temperature changes but then again I never did any chronographing in cold weather. I have found a very small drop with my PCP's at colder temperatures(about 2%) but not enough for me to worry about it. I like the added velocity of the gas spring and of the .20 over the .22. My Crow Magnum gets over 100+ fps. more. For hunting, you won't go wrong using Crow Magnum pellets is whatever caliber you get. They expand, even at lower velocities, and penetrate giving quick kills on body hits. They are the only pellet I use for small game hunting(rabbits and squirrels). Lawdog

Well, I just ordered the RX-2 in .20. My reasoning is I can always go to a heavy pellet and get .22 type performance. After reading the replies I don't think I would have gone wrong either way. Thanks for the help.

I want to hear how you like the .20. I've just started shooting the .22 in the RX-2 and it's powerful. I've been shootin in the brutal below zero weather lately and I can tell you that I know of a few squirrels that didn't care for my RX-2. I would like to see some test data on the effect of cold on the Gas guns. Unfortunately I don't own a chrony. Can anyone recomend a good low end chrony? $75 - $100?

Five chronographs later I CAN tell you the best for the money. Get a Pro Chrono.

It reads ALMOST 100% of the time. MUCH fewer "error" messages or failures to read than a Shooting Chrony.

Well the RX-2 in .20 arrived the other day. Man, that is one big gun! Unfortunately I won't be able to mount my scope until this weekend. I did shoot it with open sights and I can say this. The stock is not designed to be shot with open sights. It's real hard to get behind the sights because of the stock design. The other thing is that thing can shoot. Even with fighting the open sights I still put 5 Crow Magnum pellets on each other at 50 ft. Also, the gun shoots amazingly quiet and smooth. Can't wait to get the scope on it. It's suppose to hit 60 degrees Saturday so you know where I'll be.

It is a major pellet rifle. Everyone that has shot mine has been impressed with how quiet it is. I love mine.

Yes it IS. All that weight DOES make it easy to shoot.
