College Says “Men Working” Sign is Sexist  Posted in Top Stories | 0 comments College Says “Men Working” Sign is Sexist Dec 3, 2012
  By Todd Starnes
An Ohio community college forced a construction crew to remove its “Men Working” sign after the sign was deemed sexist and non-inclusive by a college administrator.
The construction crew at Sinclair Community College in Dayton was forced to stop working until the sign had been removed.

A spokesman for the college told Fox News that they have a deep commitment to diversity and take it quite seriously.
“While it may not have been necessary to suggest work be stopped, we stand by our commitment to providing an environment that is inclusive and non-discriminatory,” director of public information Adam Murka told Fox News.
The controversy started when a female employee took issue with the “Men at Work” sign. Murka said the employee suggested several alternative phrases to the hard hats – including “construction zone.”
He said the construction worker complied with the college’s demands and removed the sign. At this point it’s unclear what the wording of the replacement sign will be.

that's the stupidest thing I've ever heard.   my wife, one of the sweetest, most loving and beautiful creatures on earth, says that she's insulted by these PC idiots that tries to take away her femininity.

Could be too that the complainers are just liberal democrats and the thought of MEN WORKING offends them. POWDERMAN.  ;) ;)

The construction crew still gets paid. I can now hear the college complaining about cost over runs. To pick a silly cause and fight for it is stupidity, it would be better for an institution of learning to fight something like poverty, hunger, illiteracy, disease or any one of a myraid of real problems.

My understanding is that "Men Working' is a standard traffic control sign, like a stop sign or a yield sign. This standardization makes it easy for motorists to recognize a potentially hazardous condition. If the sign were to say something else, it would have to be very clear and iconically recognizable to be effective.

By taking them down, they amplify a hazard unless they have an equally effective replacement, like something that says "To the motoring public, we're improving the campus to give you a better driving experience and to beautify our lovely landscape. The project began on ..... etc etc.... (and by the way, be careful not to kill or maim anyone.). Warmest personal regards, the Campus Administration".

Dont these people have anything better to do? Maybe the foreman should make up a sign that says "BE CAREFUL JACKASS. THIS IS A CONSTRUCTION ZONE." No one would be upset because the term jackass is asexual

Seems like a busybody who has all other problems solved already...  ::)

I used to have the "Men Working" sign for my survey sites.  I hired a female technician and bought a "Work Area Ahead" (or "Survey Crew Ahead", I don't recall) sign, as I had to replace my aged sign anyway.  No big deal.  Same price and the Manual of Uniform Traffic Safety Marking doesn't specify wording on the sign, just color, placement and size.
Now I have a "Caution, Robot in Use" sign that I had made. -Traffic slows to a crawl for a look at the robot, which looks like a slightly larger conventional survey instrument.
I enjoy slow traffic in my work zone.
Just my Awf Hand comments...

It's been a long time ago,  but I'm pretty sure I was taught that it's correct to use masculine form when the gender is unknown.

Bugeye I never thought about the gender of the actual animal that the term "jackass" refers to. I guess my sign would be sexist too as it would offend all of the jennyasses on campus.  maybe replacing it with "dumbass" would be more appropriate for this college?
