8x57 barrel stub ???
« on: December 04, 2012, 04:40:11 PM »
Anyone here ever stub a barrel in 8x57 Mauser ?
I've found myself with an extra Mauser barrel and
lots of milsurp ammo and was thinking of putting it on
my Handi.
I'll mostly be shooting milsurp ammo.
No plans at this time for alot of reloads or factory ammo.
I'm not trying to build a bench gun , just a knock about
rifle good enough for 100 yard shots.
I may have to up the hammer spring but I don't know yet.
I would think the pressure would be OK.
Any thoughts ?
Thanks
Dagalee

Dagalee,

I'm sure you will be fine with the mauser.  Someone will be along to set me straight if, I'm wrong.

One would think that with the .500 S&W at 60,000 max. psi. and the .308 at 62,000 max. psi. the 7.92x57mm (8x57mm Mouser) at 57,000 max. psi. would be well within the handis' abilities. What difference stubbing, if any might make is a question for the experts.

Good point that I hadn't  considered.
Another reason I like this forum.
Anybody got any input on stubbing ?
Was planning on the threaded middle with short
Unthreaded portions on both end of the stub.

The diameter of a subbed barrel is about the same as a T/C Contender barrel. So what that means to me is if you can chamber a round in the Contender, then it is OK to stub. I do not recall any Contender barrels being chambered in 308, 7-08 or 7mm Mauser, so to be safe, I would say no.

Your right.
I didn't realize that so I looked at the Contender web site
Contender / G2 has nothing in that size and pressure range.
You have to go up to the Encore to before they offer the
high pressure stuff.
Bummer !!
Oh well.
May have to change to a 7.62x54R stub.
Can't find a max pressure on those though.

This has been discussed before, use an SB2 barrel for the stub and you shouldn't have any problems, I had a 6.5x55 stub done, Wayne didn't think it was a good idea to use an 1137 mild steel shotgun stub, but didn't have a problem with a a 4140 alloy SB2 barrel(308Win).

I had planned on using a 20 ga for the  stub.
Think I'll start looking for a SB2 barrel.
Thanks y'all

Neither of my SB2 stock H&R receivers will reliably fire a hard primer in milsurp 30-06 ammo.

I'm guessing you'll have the same problem unless you install a stronger hammer spring.

Tim pointed this out to me in a recent post.

I have one that was stubbed but it was for a ML basically a 32 cal Huntsman lots of fun to shoot and very accurate to boot. I even shoot some saboted 22 bullets out of it. Kurt
