How to protect raw steel???
« on: December 05, 2012, 05:16:18 AM »
Recently inherited a Stevens Scout 14 1/2 that had survived years of neglect.  Acquired internal repair parts and got the gun working as it was intended.  Refinished the wood and it looks incredible so decided to so the same with the steel.  Like I say it was rough so there was nothing to lose.  Completely stripped and polished everything to the point it absolutely shines like polished stainless yet the roll marks are bright as ever.  Rather than re-bluing the thing I would like to keep this polished finish.  Is there anything I could use to protect the steel without bluing that would stand up to use.  7 year old Granddaughter has already laid unequivocal claim to it and she is quite good with it.

Thanks for anything even if I'm out of luck.

Not as up on the modern finishes as I should be, but I believe there are several types of spray on clear coat finishes, some that are baked in your oven, that might do the trick.

I've got an SS 30-06 Handi that I added a steel spacer and trigger guard to that I removed the bluing from and gave em a brushed look to match the matte nickle frame, I only used Eezox on the parts, did that 5-6yrs ago, still looks the same as it did then. Eezox dries to a protective film and doesn't attract dust like regular gun oil.

Forgot about the eezox.  Finally found it in the back of a cabinet.  Old timers disease I guess.  Thanks.
