More people gave up looking for jobs or work two part time jobs.  More people, more people coming of age in the work force.  More baby boomers working longer because they are afraid to retire.  This is not realistic.  Still if figured by 1980 standards using the most recent PEEK number of people actually working, it would be about 10-12%.  Also government is encouraging veterans who can't find jobs to file for post traumatic stress syndrone if they were overseas to go on disablility.  More people being approved for disability than ever before.  50% of college grads still can't find jobs.  It just isn't realistic.  If the economy does really improve, then the unemployment will have a temporary surge up because people will be looking for better jobs than part time at Walmart or other retail places since we don't have the amount of manufacturing jobs today we once did.

Just in my area a fiberglass insullation company Knauf, went out of business about 3 years ago after about 20-25 years.  Housing being down, they didn't sell as much insullation.  They had about 800 employees.  Norboard a pressboard and plywood company went out of business about the same time, with about 300 employees.  Uniroyal tire company, (bought out by Michelin) closed their doors 2 years ago with 1,100 employees (union).  Sad situation all round.  Not much new industry has taken its place except car manufacturing and parts suppliers, but they are highly automated and numbers are not there.

Unemployment is not 7.8 percent.
You can figure if almost half the people are not paying any fed taxes at all, all of them are unemployed or under employed. There are not many jobs that could support your family and also "pay" fed taxes...I mean real jobs, where the tax money you pay is final, it don't come back, and you don't win the lottery by filling out your W2.
7.8 percent...figures can lie, and liars can figure. You can get the truth by figuring it out yourself, the country is in a huge mess right now. They are depending on those few of us who actually pay taxes to hold it all up. The answer is not increasing taxes, it's increasing the amount of people who are paying them. They have failed miserably here.

The low unemployment numbers do not reflect an increase in jobs.
It reflects an increase in Holiday jobs as well as many that are no longer on the unemployment rolls as their benefitrs have ended.
It does not take int account the people entering the workforce that can not find work.  Graduating college kids, High school graduates that are either under employed or simply can not find work.

One of the large corporations needs 200 workers right now in one of their factories.  It was on CNBC, didn't catch it, just heard it.  They can't get anyone to go to work.  The starting pay is $12/hr.  They intervied one person.  He said he could make more on unemployment and working "under the table" for cash.  Can't keep paying unemployment benefits forever.  There are jobs, even minimum wage jobs available.  However, not as many as necessary to bring up employment rates.

That is why, because I work in the energy business, if they would allow drilling and pipeline constrution, this would open up good paying jobs.  It would also lesson our dependence on foreign oil, and bring the cost of gasoline down.  Then they can take ethynol out and use the corn to feed animals and bring down meat and egg costs.  Win-win all the way around.

Half our trade defict is in imported oil, eliminate that, then we have more leverage on China.

With unemployment claimed to be less than 8% by BHO admin,,,Unemployment extended benefits dry up.  This was predictable after BHO won the election...hold on to your hat_ _things could get alot worse.

So your saying that as Un employment numbers go down because people are either under employed, or are past the point that they can no longer collect Unemployment that are lowering the Unemployment rate and that the lower the rate the fewer the weeks people can collect unemployment and they want to extend it to create the false hood that things are getting better?
Wow Imagine that the Democrats are lying.

If things are so great why does Barry want an extension of unemployment benefits included in the "grand bargain"?

I don't know if I understand you exactly,,,,but yeah,,,,something like that ,and it was timed with the election...post election UI is drying up..
.
...TM7.
When they wrote the UI law they look at the unemployment rate and the lower the rate in each state the fewer weeks are given.  So with the rates being low due to people giving up, new people that can not get a job not counted, and the underemployed statistically lowering the rates, not actually creating jobs.  More people are out of work than the number indicates as well as the underemployed that have taken part time jobs or multiple part time jobs that are not counted.
That is why the Democrats are asking for extended payments as the number does not reflect the real numbers and they can not say so as that would show a failure of their policies and that the economy is not recovering.
