Anyone Casting with Lyman 429434 44-40 Mould?
« on: February 12, 2004, 02:38:18 PM »
I acquired a dandy Lyman 429434 that is listed as 215gf FN GC for the 44-40 and shows in the old Lyman books for the 44-40.  It casts very consistent bullets but they weigh 240 gr with the check.
I"m not sure if someone has altered the mould or if they were available in different weights.
Also the current Lyman gas checks are very tight on the heel,  but according to Lyman's web page their check are now crimp on style, could be the old slip on type would fit just fine.

Anyone with some knowledge of this mould, I would appreciate your post.

Red Canyon-

Not a lot of experience with this mould but do have one.  In WW-alloy mine weighs 239 grs. bare, 247 grs with check & lube.  Marking on my mould is 429434B.  Bullets are .4291" dia on the driver bands.

Best regards-

Sky C.

Could be there was two weights for this style.  Appreciate the response very much.   Now just for some  decent weather to go give it a try.

"long long ago" Ideal and, later, Lyman, would cut molds using standard cherries to a weight a customer asked for. I have one of these options, at a much lesser weight than cataloged, but the mold has the 'standard' cherry number on it. I took a look in my (unofficial) 10&1/2 computer page long  Lyman mold listing and could only find the 215gr as a catilog item. ( this mold was last listed in the 1995 catalog). This, of course, does not resolve why there are TWO 240 grain non-standard 429434's apparently in two different parts of the country.  8)

Hello Redcanyon, and to all on the board.
My 4294324 lyman casts out at 225 with a ww/lino mix. I use hornady gaschecks, and they seem to crimp fine.
The slug works great in a .44-40, in my .44 mag rossi carbineand .44 mag ruger vaquero as well.
