I've used the 200 gr. Hornady flat point with success but want a bullet with a bit better ballistics. I've read that Nosler changed the construction on the Ballistic Tips to make them tougher. If so, I'd be leary of them doing what I want at the velocities out of my 10" barrel.

Has anyone used any other .338 bullets on deer at about 2000 fps with success?

Phil,
you might want to give the new Hornady SST a look see. I believe it weighs in at 210 grains. I don't know at what speed it will open up. Is this round the same as the .338 JDJ #2? I have considered a carbine barrel in that barrel to possibly use on an elk hunt this fall, if all goes well. The SST is a good looking pill thats for sure..

Thanks Spinafish. It's not the same as the 338 JDJ. The Woodswalker was designed in 1988 by JD Jones for a 10" barrel. It's based on a 8.15x46R case. Max velocity out of a 10" barrel is about 2000 fps. It's a great woods gun for medium game out to about 200 yards.

I've killed three feral hogs with Nosler BT 180s out of my Woodswalker. Furthest shot was 188 yards. Complete penetration, with evidence of expansion.

Anyone have any experience with a .338 JDJ #2? I understand there is also a round called a .338/.444 that is probably very close to the JDJ round. Any thoughts :grin: appreciated..

There's a doctor in WV, Larry Rogers, that has killed over 100 deer with a 338 JDJ #2. If you are a member of Hnadgun Hunters International you likely have read his writings over the years. He has very extensive experience with several of the JDJ rounds and, based on what he's written, really likes the round for anything from groundhogs to elk. In his articles over the years he really likes the 6.5 JDJ and the 309JDJ, but said the 338 JDJ was even better than the 309. With his record of groundhog and deer kills his praise of a caliber is worth serious consideration.
