Doe with Savage Model 10ML-II
« on: December 11, 2012, 01:56:48 PM »
After a long season with out seeing any bucks, I decided it was time to put some meat in the freezer. I took this doe at 60 yards with this rifle. I hit it just ahead of the front shoulder blade as the deer was quartering towards me. The bullet did exit just behind the opposite should blade passing through the lungs. It fell to the ground immediately upon impact, got up and staggered 30 yards and fell for the last time. I was using 250 grain XTP bullets at .452 caliber with a reccomended charge of Accurate Arms 5744. A hunting buddy shot 2 more does with this same rifle and same charge with the same results. This is the first time I have taken deer with this rifle and I am pleased with the results. Muzzle loader season in Wisconsin is a quiet, peaceful time to hunt and I enjoy it very much.

Good shooting!

I'm also a big fan of the savage muzzleloader.

I used the exact same load you mentioned to take two does myself.

The first one was hit just behind the shoulder and piled up like no deer I've ever seen shot before.  She literally never moved after she hit the ground.

The second was hit just a little further back from the shoulder and this one ran about 20 yards before she crashed.

Outstanding performance for any rifle, especially a muzzle loader.

Good deal.  I've used a stainless/laminate ML II for maybe 6 seasons and have used it a lot in both our regular and muzzleloading seasons.

I live in an area of NY with pretty liberal harvest limits and in the time I've had it the ML II has piled up a lot of deer at ranges from not much over an arms length to close to 200 yards.  I use 300 grain XTPs most of the time but have also had great success with the 250 grain XTP.  The primary reason I use the 300 is that, for me, the 250 doesn't always exit and I'm a fan of exit wounds to help make any possible tracking easier.

Have either of you tried other bullets?

I have tried the Hornady FTX .458 at 325 grains at the range. Again I used 5744 and was pleased with the accuracy. The recoil was up there. Also used Hornady FTX .452 in 250 grain and seen good accuracy and flatter trajectory as compared to the 250 grain XTP, about 12 inches at 200 yards, using the same powder charge and the same MMP sabot. Had problems with misfires when I used cast bullets and other sabots.
