Growing citrus trees from seeds
« on: December 14, 2012, 12:49:05 AM »
I'm living on 400 acres now & we have about 100 citrus trees scattered out over the ranch. I have been trying fruit from the different trees & have found one I especially like the taste of. I would like to plant a tree from the seeds of this fruit near my house. So I don't have so far to go to pick my morning orange.  ;D

I'm not a gardener really but occasionally I like a project. I planted some seeds from a orange from this tree. But then got to thinking maybe planting the whole orange after I suck out the juice would be even better. Anyone know the right way to go about this?

Thanks,  ;)

Most seeds from plants of today are of hybrids plants, genetically engineered to produce more and better crops. The seeds from such plants don't usually do much. Most farms and ranches take cuttings and root them / graft. You end up with the exact same plant.

most are grafted to wild-orange root stock, but wild oranges are so sour they'll make a pig squeal.
Practice your grafting skills and you can do amazing things with citrus.

Bugeye is right on. If you plant seeds you will have some pretty oranges sour as all get out but you will be able to make a wonderful orange marmalade.

I hadn't thought of marmalade.... good idea.
my Dad was a good grafter and gave a lot of people a navel tree from a good one he had.

We have one orange tree on the old home place here that must a been grafted. It half juice oranges & half navels. Both fruits are sweet and taste good especially after the first frost.  ;)  could a cutting be rooted in water or must it be grafted into a small tree?

Regards.

Try rooting some this winter and if they don't take you can get cuttings in the spring before the trees get into full summer growth. get a grafting book that covers citrus. I have grafted a lot of pecan but they have a dormant season. You have to keep all old growth from haveing leaves and the new grafts will get the sap because of the energy the leaves make. ear

If You plant a seed from your favorite tree and it is a grafted tree the seed will produce a tree true to the root stock. The root stock can then be grafted with fruiting wood from the tree that you want. If it is a hybrid tree the seed may not come up at all but planting a bunch of seed may produce something though not a fruit producer. It could be grafted with good wood just to see what happens. ear

I grafted my first persimmon the first week of May. "A" bud is starting to swell. Fingers crossed. on the orange, if you get one to come up there are several ways to root other trees and probably can find a clip on germinateing seed of oranges to on "Youtube". Air layering, and rooting in moss. ear

You really need the root stock of the wild orange as it is more resistant to disease and pest. The best way to get root stock is plant some orange seeds.

Really interesting stuff. So i can plant orange seeds and grow stock then graft my sweet little satsumas on that growth?  will it work for tangerines?
