H&R.45 Colt Buffalo Classic Carbine
« on: December 14, 2012, 04:04:32 PM »
I'm about to get a 45Colt classic carbine. Will it shoot .452 sized cast bullets ok? I know I will need to slug but am wondering what others have found with these rifles. Think I remember reading somewhere that they need a larger bullet.
Thanks, Pete

+1 to what Jason said about the .454 cast bullets. I got great accuracy from mine with 454's. If I shot cast sized to .452 accuracy was not good and I got leading issues.

Thank you guys for the info. I will find me a sizer . I have some 300 grain lead bullets at .458" now. Think I can use a .454" sizer on them ok? A one step resize if I lube them up good?
Thanks, Pete

What kind of sizer do you have? That much reduction, and depending on alloy too, will put a lot of stress on an old Lyman 450 Lubri-Sizer AND the bench. The Lee Push Thru for mounting on a reloading press would probably be the best bet to do those (short an old Star commercial unit, etc.).

I have a Lee push thru in .457 that I just listed for trade for a .454". So I don't have the right die yet. I only have Lee stuff, so might as well stick with it....I like it as it works good for  me. I cud keep the .457 and do it in 2 steps, but if can get it in 1 step guess it's better.
I don't even have the rifle yet, but it's on the way.
Thanks for the advice.

Too bad your die is only .457 since many 45-70s are larger groove dimensions, BUT, in case anybody might be interested, it can be lapped out at home to .458-.460 pretty quick and easy to custom fit their needs (after all, .460 is only .0015 'on a side' from .457.
To use a .454 you might need to relieve the lead in on that new sizer a bit. Wait to order a size until you get the rifle and check bore/groove AND that the fully fire-formed case mouth will take as a bullet diameter.

Good info. I will wait on rifle and look for some of them size 8 sinkers to slug the bore.  On the leade of the sizer , gcrank1....is that the piston that pushes the bullet thru the sizing die ? I can see the one I have in the .457 set being too large to go thru the .454.  Never saw just the die part for sale...always the complete sizer. Good advice from all and will try Jim's liquid soap tip when the time comes and save on bullet lube.
Thanks, Pete

I slugged my bore, got .454.  Did terrible with factory and cowboy loads.  Then reamed to Casull.  Don't shoot it much anymore, but it did great with .454 300gr GC lead I got from someone.  Ranch Dogs I think.

It's a nice gun though.

You can often use round balls for C&B revolvers, typically .454 and .457 to slug a bore too. Sometimes even 'flattening' a .440 RB in a vice a bit will increase the dia. enough to get a good imprint and read.
The size die set comes with a properly dimensioned pusher, usually only a few thou' under the die dia.; the leadin on the sizer is the actual 'chamfered' end of the die for bullet entry. Typically Lee products are not so hard that they cant be re-worked a tad by a careful workman. The Lee tumble lube would be good to use on the as cast bullets before sizing (let dry, of course). They will push through much easier and actually be ready to use, but you could give them another tumble and dry too.

Great info....just found I can order a .454' sizing die as a part from Lee and not the whole kit. Costs $15 (probably $15 to ship ha ha).
I will just get this die if needed. Great info here and no rifle yet. Thank you all.

FWIW, the Lee 'universal belling die' and 'universal decapper' are in my kit and have been often handy for when I dont need to full length resize cases. For cast bullets I usually use the fully fire-formed cases and decap, recap, bell a tad if needed to get bullet base started and use the seating/crimp die to seat and just roll the bell back in or only a smidge of crimp. My cases last about forever (Ive had over 20 reloads in some cases and still going). I also really like the ease of use of the Lee 'case length gauge and trimmer' to keep them all uniform. All these bits are inexpensive, though it will add up, but you would maximize your shipping over just one piece.

I shoot a downsized, .458"- .454" 400gr cast bullet in my 45LC. They shoot great but are not intended for long range. Loaded with just a few grain of TB powder, they make a quiet and accurate combination that might just be my next squirrel hunting load. 8) Who knows, maybe I'll see the bullet strike through the scope. That would be a sight to behold!

Thanks, Dinny

Hey Dinny....do you downsize that .458" bullet to .454" in one step? Just run it thru the .454 sizer?
Thanks, Pete

Sorry I'm not much help, I got them that size. Maybe someone else could answer that in the cast bullets section.

Thanks, Dinny
