Older H&R 12 G Shotgun
« on: December 14, 2012, 07:13:48 PM »
How to tell what year it is?  It is in my truck and it is raining or I would give the numbers now. I am guessing the year around 1984 or 5.  Can you even use the receivers on one that old for other barrels?
Thanks, Jer

So I finally see where it is an 1986 purchase.  I have more pictures of it also I would like to share.  That dude has killed more quail than coyotes and chicken houses.  I was 12 and could reload that ejector pretty quick on a covey.

What is the issue with the weak spot and crack in the receiver?
Thanks, Jer

It's not a crack, it's flashover on the void in the cast iron, just the way they made em, you'd be surprised what else you'll find in the FAQs, link below is a discussion on the difference between steel and cast iron frames, there's a pic of a frame just like yours with the flashover removed.

Looks like a big crack to me Tim!  Didn't know to search for the word flashover.  If I knew the proper term used on the board I might be able to search more efficiently.  I had seen the pics of the SB1 and SB2 rec's but had not read on.  Anybody else have any info on these old shotguns?
Thanks, Jer

Here's a pic of a frame just like yours(except electroless nickle) made the year before, yours is a 1984 frame, all build year codes can be found in the FAQs also.  ;) Here's a reply by Bill Goforth on another forum on the model 088.  http://www.thefirearmsforum.com/showthread.php?t=28267

Looks like I found another variation.

Machined bottom interior and one upper triangular cast hole in rear.

H&R Model 258 with AZ prefix, nickel plated 30-30.
