Well Mama lit me pick out my own present this year , in the form of a Rock Island compact 45 , I think it will be a nice fit for me , I've never been a big fan of "Tupperwear " guns and being on the large size

its not too much to carry a real metal pistol .

I even picked up a nice leather Stoner belt holster for it to live in along with a box of the Hornady Critical Defense 185g FTX ammo , with this combo their's no reason for me to feel undergunned no matter were I go .

sorry Mikey, .45ACP ball ammunition IS the best of all pistol ammunition used by any military but it does not compare well with modern controlled expansion bullets. To improve ball ammo they should at least use the Hornady truncated cone flat point FMJ.

Why? Because the 230 gn ball load from the 45 acp was designed to replace the 45 Colt round, which was designed to de-horse a rider or falter his mount at 50 yds. Please keep in mind that when the 1911 pistol was first issued to the Army they still had mounted units, not like obama's believe about bayonets.

If a 230 gn ball can knock a man off his horse it is good enough for me, and it was. On a personal note, it worked just fine for me in both southeast Asia and Latin and South America. One may feel the need for some zombie max type ammo when dealing with drug zombies and the like but I have never seen two rounds of 45 ball, or for that matter, 3 rounds of 9mm ball fail to stop a fully armed enemy soldier in full battle dress intent on putting an end to you (me, actually). That's why. It works.

Was just curious Mikey. You see, I'm not a fan of all the gimmick ammo and components either. I've shot a truckload of 200 grain cast SWCs and know how they function in my guns. I know where they are going when I shoot. I load them myself and haven't had a failure in over 30 years. I shoot regularly out to 100 yards with my 45s. I'm a fan of using what I practice with because I feel it increases my odds. Never tried to de-rider a horse or de-horse a rider but I have seen the effects of different bullets on flesh and there doesn't seem to be much difference in the outcome as long as the bullet goes where it should.

Granted , Ball ammo does a good job and has for a long time , however the old model T would get you from point A to point B , myself I like my big Dodge truck and I just like the way the Hornady stuff shoots .

A more fair comparison would be the big Dodge to a big Ford truck. There's just not that great a difference in real world performance. Any way you look at it, it's a big slow mover that will get the job done if put in the right place.

Guys/gals; The 45acp ball ammo did a great job during my gallon jug of water tests. I do have some soup bowel JHP speer 200grs somewhere for personal protection pumped up to the max. I seen this the the local hospital ER when they brought in a guy shot 5 times with a 1911/45acp and he lived. It did put him down and out though. After seeing this i pumped up my next reloads. Its all about the shot placement too.
Congrats nice wife too. I been wanting the RIA full size 1911 in nickel finish in 45acp too.

Better to have loved and lost than never to have loved at all.

I think that ball will perform more effectively out of s semi . I like well tuned and good semis---I don't know I would put a RIA in the mix of good, but who am I too bash em, I only had one that was bad--and function with ball is better than not functioning.

Good for you Stimpy! Another 45 in the house is ALWAYS a good thing!!

Has anyone looked at or used the Federal FMJE bullet? Its a full metal jacket EXPANDING. They accomplish it with a hollow cavity under the jacket. (Actually I think it has foam in it...) But it feeds perfectly even in unthroated barrels and expands!

I have been using it for years in unthroated barrels and feeding has always been 100%.
