So I got the sportster, got it home, unboxed it and proceeded to clean up the cardboard lint a bit and noticed this marking inside the action. What is this all about "675 CG"? I don't think all SPortster barrels have marking like this on them, do they? I mean, its supposed to be a brand new gun. This look like it wasnt even done with a CNC machine at the factory. What is this crap?

Last three digits of the frame serial number? Most all factory fitted underlugs are marked when fitted.

Ok, good to know mine is no different.
Now, I just got back from shooting it, a whole 2 rounds through it. The bullets slide in and out real nice (now) when they are un-fired. After I shot my first shot, I went to go open the action and expect to see the .17 shell come flying out...well it didn't. It was stuck. The extractor did not fling it out like it did when the casing was still un-fired. I opened and closed the action quite a few times (not real super easy, quite hard_. About after the 3rd-4th time, I opened it up and the casing was stuck out of the barrel about 1/8th of an inch. When I went to go yank it out, it was sliding out rather tight, but it did come out.

Is this an extractor problem? It being brand new, should I oil it up? Why did it expend the unspent case perfect but the fired case got stuck? I'm quite a bit frustrated to be honest. The gun was already 7 days late from the sporting good store, I finally get it today and this stuff happens -.- Sorry ya'll needed to vent and get some info. Now when I get home, I slide a un-fired bullet in there close th action, pop it back open and the case goes FLYING out.
What is up with my sportster?!?!

There is nothing wrong with your Sportster... clean/polish the chamber... the scratched in serial number is just so you can match barrels to receivers.... some of us have dozens of receivers/barrels, so it is good to be able to keep track of original pairings.

Ok but still, why would it allow itself to spit out a unspent cartridge as opposed to a spent cartridge. Thats what I dont get... :( I'm reallly hoping nothing is wrong with the barrel.

Calm down , all is well , give the chamber a good cleaning and them it should be fine , whats happening is that there may be some lube from were they cut the chamber still in there and when you fire a round it heats up and causes the spent case to stick .

Here's what I resorted to doing after finding out my .17 was gummin' up on me.Skeetin' was still fun, But i'd have much rather been shootin' my .17

I don't clean my .17s much, just when new and after accuracy degrades which isn't all that often, but when I do I use a Patchworm.

Tim

Haven't use this, but looks like it would work good with a good stiff 1-pc rod.

Well guys after a good reaming and cleaning last night (thank you Stimpy) I took the sportster out again today. Shot 100+ rounds through it, the extractor was working fine. cartridges fell in and exited smooth as butter. Very happy with this little guy. Even with no scope or sights on it for that matter it is still VERY accurate.
Since I took the scope plate off for now (until I pick up another scope) I left the 3 bolts in the holes that secure the mount to the top of the rifle. They actually made very well open sights. I was hitting 12OZ soda pop cans from a good 30-40 yards out...with screws as sights XD Very impressed and very happy with the SPortster .17 !

Cannot wait until I get a nice scope for it, then see what it really does.

Well, I opened my hoppes rifle cleaning kit last night and tried a .22 caliber rod/rod end. it would only fit into the casing home, not all the way down the barrel (as expected). So I guess i'll just pick up a path worm guy, they looks pretty nice :D

I'll try not to ! So far with just those screws as rough sights, it was plinking away fine already XD Just counted the ammo, I fired off 102 rounds in less than an hour. I was really diggin' it!

Take a little strip of wood, put a finishing nail in it and tape it up front as a ramp and post sight. Use one screw in the back, say the front one and turn it so the slot is lengthwise and use it for the rear sight. Tip the front as needed to get your windage right and the nail height for elevation and go shootin'.

Glad to hear you got it licked!

Something else to know, 17's like to split cases from time to time. pparently its normal as they are not reloaders its not a consern and dosent seem to effect anything.

Maybe Santa will bring ya a scope for that thing!?!

Merry Christmas,

Santa (Myself) will be buying me one after the holidays are over. Gotta spend the paychecks on friends and family first! But I enjoyed the Pentax Gameseeker so much on my .45-70, I may just buy another one of those.

Good suggestion, I like it ! However for now I think these little screws will do their job until the holidays are over.
Thats a rather neat "bush fix" for a sight if you ever needed one.

;D , I had a front sight taped on one for about a year once; the black plastic electricians tape blended in so well I basically forgot about it.

Yeah, I suppose with it being a .17 there wouldn't be any shift in the tape from the recoil. (What recoil). Good stuff man. I suppose there is more than one way to skin a cat.

Not all Sportsters have sights, the 17hmr doesn't and the 17M2 didn't, they've made various models with and without sights over the years, just depends on when it was made.
