My Talo combo is complete
« on: December 17, 2012, 01:50:48 PM »
A couple months ago, I rentered the Handi world when I picked up a Talo 357 at a local gun show, discussion here;
http://www.gboreloaded.com/forums/index.php/topic,269132.msg1099613527.html#msg1099613527

I saw here in the FAQ that the 44mag barrels were all gone. I called H&R and was told they were available.  ;D Part #F403634.
But he couldn't tell me how many. So, I sent it in on Dec 3rd, and got it back on the 14th;

But heres the issue. When I first got it with the 357 barrel, the action was very stiff, being unfired. Also the forearm was stiff going on and coming off. After some lube and working the action many times, it became acceptable. When the 44 came back, action was very stiff, and the forearm was very hard to remove and install. After lubing and working the action repeatedly, its gotten better.

However, last night I put the 357 barrel back on, and the forearm simply fell into place. No effort to remove it either.  ???  And the action opens with ease. Why would the forearm that was tight, now be loose???
Is there any issue with the forearm, and action, being very tight with one barrel, and loose with the other barrel? If not, would it be okay to do a little sanding on the forearm to open up the hole a little bit, to make it fall into place on the 44mag barrel, like it now does on the 357, and thereby loosening up the action??

Let me add here the when both barrels are installed without the forearm, they are rock solid.

FWIW, when I called Remington to confirm the job, the lady I talked to was very surprised that a Talo barrel was available. She said they must have had one lying around.  ???  I got the idea that she didn't want me to post about it here. Oops!

I just don't want to get peoples hopes up that there a lot available. The guy I originally talked to also said they had 357 Talo barrels, but.........??

Thank you.

Awesome.  Wish I could get ahold of some of the Talo barrels.  I really prefer iron sights.  8)

When you sent the barrel in for the 44 barrel they adjusted the forend to that barrel so it may not fit your 357 barrel the same way as it did before.  Best practice for switching barrels (IMO) is for each barrel to have its own forend.  One forend may work fine though, so shot it and see if you are happy with the results.

Nice set up by the way. 8)

+1 on the dedicated forends. However, I have found a pretty good short term solution.

 I would say that if you were to use this rout you should first get the tighter barrel fit right and then see if you can add some meat to the rear of the forend stud on the loser barrel so that it fits how you like.

Just got back from the indoor range. Put about 20 rounds through each, and they shot just fine.  ;D

A Talo barrel is shorter and has sights on it.
