Quaker guns
« on: December 17, 2012, 04:08:18 PM »
Some 1993 photos taken at Grayling on Range 8.  Below are Quaker guns that I made which were posted 5-600 yards away.  Drywall sheets were to simulate crew.  They were very difficult targets.

They were very difficult targets.

True I am sure.  They are mostly air.  Any record of how many shots were required to cause the damage shown?

I really don't know how many rounds were fired at the two Quaker guns.  Each crew could fire up to three rounds and we probably had 15 rifled guns.   This was not part of the competition so some of the crews may not have fired at them.  Since it was at a different range than the competition targets crews had to get the range quickly in order to have any success.  After having fired on them, I can see why having impact fused rounds would have been much more effective.  The cheeks, barrel, trail and axle under the barrel present only a little more than a 12" square target.  Catching an enemy battery from a flanking in position would make it much easier to hit their guns.

Check out that keyhole just to the left of the Parrott rifle's breech.

Check out that keyhole just to the left of the Parrott rifle's breech.

This was a short round that tumbled after hitting the ground a few yards in front of the gun.
