454 Bullet question
« on: December 19, 2012, 03:04:27 AM »
I am putting this question out to you guys that use the 454 for hunting.  What seems to be the best performing bullets in the 240-260 grain range.  I am gonna be shooting them out of a handi-rifle, so I'll get a little more velocity.  I am mainly concerned about overpowering the bullets.  I know that the lead bullets should perform well, so I am mainly interested in jacketed bullet results...but I'd love to hear about any sucess stories!  Thanks!
John

very few jacketed bullets will stand up to the velocitys a 454 rifle are capable of. I consider 300 grain bullets and not pushing them as hard as possible. maybe something like the nosler partition handgun bullet.

If you don't mind spending the money, the FA 260 JFP might be a consideration.  I think FA still has a goodly supply of these bullets, although I think they are out of production.  One thing for certain, a jacketed bullet that will tolerate full throttle from a 454 rifle is gonna need to be of the "premium" variety.

Good luck,
