45/410 barrel for deer hunting?.....
« on: December 19, 2012, 12:53:59 PM »
So sorry if this has been addressed but I did a search without much luck.
Got a buddy with one of the 45/410 with choke barrelled pistols.
He's wondering about using 410 slugs for close range deer....or just plinking.

My initial thought was he'd be better off to pull the choke and used the 45 but some looking around seems to indicate that the 45 may not be real accurate.
Anyhow...can someone tell us how well the gun will shoot slugs?
Are we correct that we need to pull the choke to shoot slugs?
Thanks for any help.

Greetings,
Before shooting 410 slugs or 45lc pull the choke.  410  slugs are fine for plinking but not for hunting deer.  The 45lc is a fine deer cartridge, only one way to tell if it will be accurate, shoot it.

Does it matter if the slugs are rifled?

The choke is designed to stop the spin of the shot column as it engages the rifling while traveling down the barrel and give you a better shot pattern upon exiting the barrel.  I have always been told to never shoot 410 slugs or 45lc in these barrels without the choke removed, this advise I have never challenged.

I realize the choke should be out but wondering how the rifled slugs would react in a already rifled barrel?

My experience has been poor accuracy with slugs, okay with 45lc.

I had poor accuracy with .45 Colt in my 16" barrel.  At 50 yds. I was shooting groups half the size with the same ammo through a 4-5/8" Ruger Blackhawk.

I suspect the poor accuracy is a result of the poor sights.  My barrel has a full length vent rib with a bead front sight.  The rear sight is a U-notch, which I find difficult to get a consistent sight picture with.  I suspect a traditional square notch, or a peep sight would give much improved performance downrange.

Either that, or I keep thinking I just need to get a low profile red dot and be good to go with either slugs, shot, or .45s.

My experence with one is that the 45 has to make a long jump before hitting the rifelings and to me this would have an effect on the bullet. I know there have been a number of post about making your own brass which is the correct length and this does improve how well it groups but I have had at least 3 of them and none shot the 45 very well group wise. I have a super 14 stainless vent rib that I use as a snake gun works great for that,
