Bushing for Rem700 Barrel going into stub?
« on: December 19, 2012, 01:28:32 PM »
The breech face of  Remington 700 the takeoff barrel I'm putting into a stub has its chamber recessed.

Can I turn a bushing to fill the void in the chamber wall and press it in, or am I going to have to set the barrel back into the stub and rechamber?  Both are options, just one is more expensive and time consuming.

Do they make a 204 improved?:-)

I have never made one. But i have four that were made for me. I am pretty sure you have to cut it back and rechamber it.

Never seen a two piece chamber, you will need to cut it off and do it right.  The recessed part does not support the round, so I guess you could just let the head stick out recessed part back inside the stub.  Larry

The cartridge case head is unsupported in a  700?

I must be misunderstanding.

The case head on a 700 is supported by the bolt face  .The recess should be removed  on the donor barrel and rechambered
 Good Luck

Jedman's given me some clarification via PM.

I may try shooting it as-is, with the cartridge case head not surrounded, or I may put a bushing in the recessed portion just for aesthetics and peace of mind.  Per Jedman and trotterlg above, the portion sticking out is so solid that surrounding it by chamber wall is just not needed.

Thanks, all!

I think it would be wise to insert a cartridge, and measure the amount sticking out, then compare it to a sectioned cartridge...   perhaps there is more sticking out in YOUR chamber than you think

All good advice, thanks!

I have a 20-6.8SPC reamer on the way so I can set this barrel back and clean up the 204 Ruger chamber.

As 30 Rem brass is a bit scarce, I'll likely cut a rim and use 30-30 Win brass as the parent.  Hoping for 4000+ FPS with 32gn pills.  If I can exceed 204 Ruger performance, I'll be happy--but, for now, I'll just be happy to get this tube nice n' hot.

For what it's worth, I've turned the 204 Ruger barrel down to fit inside a 12ga barrel on an SB-2 frame and left the profile of a 3" 12ga hull on the outside of the liner.

I cut about 3/4" off the chamber end of the barrel so I wouldn't be tempted to fire my 204 Ruger rounds in it... those cases seemed to stick out abnormally far.

Remington advertises 3 rings of steel. Which is bogus, but it has sold rifles for them. You have the bolt, barrel and receiver that "surrounds" the case head.

Good Luck and Good Shooting

ANY gun regardless of action design  cannot and does not support the last .200 of a modern centerfire case when fired. Regardless whether its a strait walled cartridge  or bottle necked a guns chamber will have at least .003 and as much as .010 or more clearance at the point where the case head occupies when the gun is fired. This solid portion of the case head is subject to the full pressure thru the flash hole but does not expand more than .001 so it never touches the chamber walls and is never supported except from rearward breech thrust by the bolt or standing breech ect.
I understand that you dont feel confident of having the back end of the case head showing but if it is headspaced properly and not shortend from the way it was as a Rem. 700 it would have been safe in your handi.  ???
