red dot on shotgun?
« on: December 20, 2012, 04:04:48 AM »
This maybe should be in the optics forum but I figure you folks may be better versed in heavy recoil optics

I am considering mounting a red/green dot scope on my 12 ga shotgun using 3 inch shells for coyotes.
Any suggestions open or closed dots, brand, for under $100
Any suggestions on why I should use one or not

Thanks

I have a burris FastFire III and really like it. I would combine it with the Burris Speed Bead mount and go. I got mine for $170 at Optics Planet a month ago, I see they are higher now.  I also have a Bushnell TRS-25, which would work great also. This is a $100 optic, but comes set for a picatinny mount... Either will handle the recoil of a mag shotgun with no problem. I prefer the open style of the FF over the closed style of the TRS, but both have plenty of field of view, especially for a shotgun.

I've used Tasco PDP's on my Turkey and Slug guns for over 30 years... and they have held up very well to recoil. I have three PDP 2's and two PDP 3's. Four of them are 10+ Years old.

I just had a PDP 2 break... lost the horizontal adjustment... but it was over 20 years old. Don't even think of buying the Camo PDP 2 as I had several and they all broke... I bought them on a closeout and they must have been produced just before Tasco went belly up... and before they were bought by Bushnell. I'd buy the PDP 3 CMP. Natchez has them for $102. I just bought one to replace the PDP 2 that broke.
