Got home from church Sunday afternoon late, and had a real itch to go hunting. The problem was it was pouring rain, and I didn't have enough daylight to go to my land.
So I grabbed the raingear and a slug gun and headed for public land about 4 miles away.
Standing in a steady hard downpour, looking over a long dry slough in the lake, I spotted deer about 300 yds away. They were taking their own sweet time easing my way, stopping to chat or whatever deer do, and it was becoming a race between their getting in range, and darkness falling.
Finally they passed the marker I had on a tree limb for 200 yards. About 50 yards more and I would feel confident in the sabot slug.
From the corner of my eye I see movement to my left, a flash of something and the deer left the way they had come in a big hurry. A coyote was preoccupied with catching his supper, a mouse or vole or such, and was less than 20 yards away. I shot him twice for good measure.
