Report: Jon Hammar to be released from Mexican prison today  Published December 21, 2012
FoxNews.com
  •    The first photo of Marine Veteran Jon Hammar inside the Matamoros state prison.
  •    Jon Hammar has been held in the notorious CEDES Mexican prison since August.
  •    Hammar is being held in a notorious prison just over the Mexican border.
Next Slide Previous Slide   DEVELOPING: Jon Hammar, the U.S. Marine imprisoned in Mexico on a gun charge, will be released today, his mother told Fox News Radio.
Olivia Hammar said the judge hearing Hammar's case issued a ruling in his favor and that her son is to be released at a time on Friday yet to be announced. No more details were available. Hammar, 27, who served in Iraq and Afghanistan, has been stuck in a notorious, drug cartel-controlled prison just 15 miles south of the U.S. border since Aug. 13, after he crossed into Mexico and declared an antique shotgun to Mexican customs officials.
News of his pending release came just a day after a letter surfaced from Mexico's ambassador to the U.S. that insisted Hammar's case would go to trial.
"This circumstance requires that he remain under detention during the duration of his trial," Arturo Sarukhan said in the letter.

I don't thing he was "wrongly" held. I think he was normally dealt with by Mexican standards. He's lucky to be getting out of prison at all. There have been lots of Americans rotting in Mexican prisons after they wandered into Mexico while on hunting trips.

If he is released--and I hope for his sake that he is--it should serve as a lesson for him and everyone else to stay the heck away from Mexico.

It absolutely defies logic as to why anyone that is not a mexican resident would want to go to mexico with the current atmosphere down there.
It's all a hot mess...........

Things have really improved since the two major drug cartels near the border have resolved some leadership issues.

I'd have no trouble going to Cozumel or Cancun. Those are tourism centers and the government defends them aggressively. There are still the occasional problems, but it's nothing like the rest of the country.

The MEXICANS are doing all they can to get out of that crap hole, why would anyone in their right mind voluntarily go there?

All the more reason to crack down on the invasions here and stop rewarding criminals instead of punishing and prosecuting them. POWDERMAN.  >:( >:(

I've been to the Yucatan a few times, looking at mayan ruins etc. we love Chichen Itza.
at many major intersections, there will be a machine gun nest on one corner.  puts a little excitement in your vacation.
this time we'll only be getting off the ship at Honduras and Belize.
