Smith & Wesson 29-3 for a steal?
« on: December 23, 2012, 04:13:39 AM »
Greetings all, this forum has been invaluable for me in gathering information about both firearms I own and ones I've considered buying. Today, I have a question that I'm hoping someone can help me with. I have an opportunity to buy a Smith and Wesson 29-3  with an 8 3/8" barrel from a friend who needs the money for another gun. He's willing to sell it to me for $375 because the ejector rod has a tendency to back out after two dozen or so rounds, locking the cylinder in its closed position. I've shot this revolver repeatedly and this appears to be the only issue. The bluing is near perfect, high 90th percentile, I'd say. It comes with a shoulder holster and pachmayr grips in addition to the original wood grips. I'm pretty sure this is a no brainer, but I want to make sure that this isn't going to be a problem gun. Can anyone with experience on this gun lend some advice? Thanks in advance!

Very good price indeed.  A drop of Loctite Blue in the ejector rod threads will stop it from backing out under recoil.

Nice score for Christmas.

Out of all the 29's I had way, way back (4-screw, 29/29-2 3-screw) I got the most use out of those with 8 3/8 barrels in pistol matches and for hunting.   Wanted a shorter 29 many years later for mountain carry in grizzly backcountry, a 29 Classic 5", but never got around to buying one.   If I had bought a 5" I'd still have a 29 though.   Miss them, the early 19's and 41's I had the most of all the S&W's I've owned (but still kind of miss the various kit guns as well).
Evolution at work. Over two million years ago the genus Homo had small cranial capacity and thick skin to protect them from their environment. One species has evolved into obese cranial fatheads with thin skin in comparison that whines about anything and everything as their shield against their environment. Meus

Great deal - you can always send to S&W for a fix. Barrel is a bit long for me but price is right.

I am obviously VERY envious---Jealous is another feeling.
Then again, I seem to have made it a lifelong quest to keep the economy afloat by buying high and selling low. >:( >:( ;D ;)

I just took delivery of a S&W 29-2, 4" blue today. But, not for the steal you payed. I've been saving a 6&1/2" barrel for some time, thiniking of sending this to S&W to have the barrel put on this gun? Then I'd have to buy another Dirty Harry shoulder rig for it, hehehe. Still got a couple original Dade speedloaders for this.
