Zeiss conquest
« on: December 24, 2012, 05:36:07 AM »
I was out in the back 40 night before last hunting. To make a long story short, there are 4 does that hang out over there & the night before I saw them with another deer that I believe was a buck. But I had my shotgun with me so they were out of range. So night before last I went back but with a real accurate browning low wall in 243 and a leupold 3-9x40.
I watched them feed down the fence line but honestly could not see well enought in the fading light which one was the buck. Or if there was a buck.
So yesterday I called camera land and ordered a new zeiss conquest 3-9x40. With the # 20 reticle. We will see if that helps my tired eyes.
By the way, there on sale for $349.99. With a rebate from zeiss. Merry Christmas to me.

Lloyd, I have 3 zeiss scopes on drillings I bought used. They are the German made zeiss and are fine scopes. But on my retirement income I can't afford $2000+ for a another one like those. So I decided to try a conquest.  ;) we will see if it helps, I know DM put one on his drilling and speaks highly of it. Also Bobby Tomleck seams to like them. When people of their experience start buying something and recommending it I take notice.

I have one on my Model 700 in .30-06.  I think they are a good value.  I also like the new Leupold VX-2.  It's lighter, smaller, and very bright.  You'll like the Conquest.

those german made ziess scopes are about as good as it gets. Wish i could afford one for every rifle i own too. I never could even afford one! I tend to bash conquests on the internet. I do own 2 and to be honest there good scopes. I just laugh at guys though that buy them thinking there some top shelf scope because they have ziess engraved on them. How they figure zeiss can make a top shelf scope for 350 bucks when there own top shelf scopes cost 2k. threre a good scope for the average guy but if they were as good as some want you to think ziess would have a hell of a time selling there good stuff. Keep in mind that your buying a 300 dollar scope that compares in optics and price to a vx2 leupold and you still in my opinion are gettting a pretty good bang for your buck.

Lloyd, you mention repeat ability of the adjustments as a big issue to you. You seem very concerned with the mechanics of a scope. Even more than the glass quality and clarity of the reticle.

I tend to mount a scope & sight it in 2-3" high at 100 yards and never touch it again, as long as it holds zero I'm happy. My best Alaskan friend knows little about guns so I bought & gifted him with his guns & optics. He broke several scopes each year. Leupolds too. His hands are just too powerful from years of picking fish. And he's by nature a fiddler with all his stuff. He's constantly adjusting his scope. His last rifle I finally mounted a used jap Tasco 4x on it. He hasn't broke that one. Nothing to adjust.

With the reticle etched into the glass in the second focal plane I believe the reticle will be clearer to my bad eyes than a leupold will be. That's the main reason I bought the conquest. I know it's not the same features as the German made scopes. But it does have that feature that I like.  ;)

thing is that in my experience for what its worth a scope that doesnt track well usually doesnt hold zero over the long haul. A good bump in the field is about all it takes to throw off a scope that doesnt have real good windage and elevation control. Its one reason i dont really care for the older friction ajustable leupolds. I just dont trust them. A half inch may not mean a thing at a 100 yards but out at 400 it can be a problem. Not to worry about your conquest though. they seem to track pretty well and hold zero as good as anything.Bottom line is you can have the best glass in the world but if your scope wanders its sure not a good scope. A scope that will hold zero and is mechanicaly reliable and gives up 5 percent in light gathering at least will get the job done. Dont get me wrong i like good glass too but in all reality all it gives you is maybe 5 more minutes of shooting time and in most states shooting hours are legaly over before then anyway.

I've had my Conquest for several years now, it's still a better low light level scope than any Leupold i ever looked through and i happen to like Leupolds very much, so i'm not just saying that.

Look through the new VX-2s.  Big difference....

swampman has got that right. the newer model leupolds are hands down better then there older product. If i had to choose between a conquest and an old varix II it would be a no brainer to pick the conquest but the new vx2s are vastly better then the older ones and the few i have are everybit as good in low light as my conquests and are cheaper to boot. Ive never had to send one of my conquests in for repair, I guess that shows there pretty good but i would doubt that there service policys are as good as leupolds or as easy to access. Like i said dont take this for fact as ive never had to.
