New build? Opinions
« on: December 25, 2012, 06:55:42 AM »
Merry Christmas to all my GB friends,

I been thinking about a build for several months and wanted some input from others. I have several physical issues that make very much recoil difficult for me now. So I have been thinking about building a 7TCU to hunt. I'm torn between a CZ 527 lux, rebarreled to 7tcu and the easier route of a custom contender barrel. I already have everything else for the contender carbine. But I have wanted to do a CZ in this caliber for a long time.
If I started with a CZ 527 in 223 then all that would be required would be a rebarrel. I would go with a clean 22" barrel slightly heavier that the standard CZ. No sights, only a scope.

Thoughts appreciated.

Nice choice! What is your intended use? I have a Rem Model 7 stainless with a 20 inch barrel. I hand load for it and have it as a light weight, noise sensitve deer, bear, pig rifle. I have a self imposed limit with this rifle of 200 yards. I can launch a 140 gr SGK at 2450fps. Mine has a kevlar stock and wears a Leupold 2x7. Where I hunt there are a lot of bear and cougar so I prefer a faster second shot than a Contender will give me. Like you I also own a Contender and that is a very good consideration if there's not a lot of need for a follow-up shot. The 7 TCU was developed for the Contender pistol as a siloette cartridge. It benifits from a longer barrel and is a very efficent cartridge using very little powder to achieve this performance. Recoil is negligable.

If you handload a light 7-08 would easily do the same thing and perhaps cheaper. If a custom rifle is the goal I'd go with the CZ for the uniqueness..

I have your problem also. I would love to get a 527 to re-barrel to the 7TCU but the price of the action puts it above my means. I am buying a Marlin x7 in 223 and doing the Re-barrel myself (with the help of a friend with experience) i have heard that the x7 is a duplicate of the Savage barrel screw in system. Down to the wrench to do the switch.
If I had a contender lower I would go that rout. But I don't.
