Rechambering?
« on: December 25, 2012, 08:39:47 AM »
First I wanted to say hello and Merry Christmas to everyone, I am new to the site and am debating on buying a SB2 to make into a little pig gun.  My question is can a 45/70 be rechambered to a 450 nitro express I haven't seen any posts about this conversion.  Any info would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

WELCOME!!!

In a word, NO...

The H&R action is not a good plaform for the larger belted magnums...

BUT The 45-70 is NO SLOUCH and CAN safely be loaded up to some VERY respectable numbers!!  MOST people choose to back off before the "max'' is reached. ;)

Welcome to the site!  Lots of good handi information and make sure you read the FAQ sticky.  ;)  Lots of good information there:

The .45-70 is a great pig gun as is, in my book.  If you really feel you need more, there's a reamer to rent here that can throat it for you to take bigger bullets and several guys have taken them out to .45-90 and even .45-120.  If you cannot kill a pig with a 350 gr. RNFP going 2400 fps though, somethings wrong.  That's nearly 2200 foot pounds of energy and is all I need on a 6.5 -7 pound gun.  ;)  I like Hornady's 350 gr. RNFP with 49 gr. Reloader7 and std. CCI large rifle primer in Starline cases, if you reload anyway.  ;)
Big bad bullet!

The 3.25" 450 NE is not a belted mag and the pressure is low enough to work in the old double barrel break open african guns so I don't think it would be an issue in a Handi.  The case capacity is about 12 grains more than a 45-120 so not that much of a jump.   Obviously one could load the 450 NE to a pressure that the Handi wouldn't like but then you can do that with a 45-70 cartridge as well.

Welcome aboard hwhit!!  ;) What BB said, the 450NE is no problem for an SB2 framed H&R, same goes for the 450NE #2, I have the 45-120(dies and brass cost less), so no need to do the 450NE which has almost identical case capacity, I have a 499 Hubel Express wildcat which is 450NE #2 necked up to .500" in a rechambered 500S&W Handi, also have a 50-140 BC that will exceed 500NE ballistics in the 32" barrel, 570gr @ 2200fps, so the 450NE is no problem.  ;) Below are previous discussions on all three, more to be found using the search button above, select advanced search.  ;)

Thanks everyone, I know I don't need anything this powerful for pigs or anything else in North American but I have always wanted a true big bore rifle, and the H&R seems to be the most affordable option.  I already have a 375 H&H in a Ruger #1 and wanted to go bigger.  Quickdtoo I looked into a 499 Hubel Express but ED said it was very hard to find brass at this time.

Check with Captech Intl (Jamison Intl revived), I got some more 50-140 brass from them not long ago, they list the 450NE #2, be sure to let Ed know if they have it.......after you get yours of course!!!   ;D

....I have a 499 Hubel Express wildcat which is 450NE #2 necked up to .500" in a rechambered 500S&W Handi, also have a 50-140 BC that will exceed 500NE ballistics in the 32" barrel, 570gr @ 2200fps, so the 450NE is no problem....

I had a 500BPE and it was a kicker with full loads  (hammered Double Rifle)   I can only imagine a 500NE 3"... from what I have read the 500/3.25" had a bit less kick..

I think a 50 cal in an 3" or 3.25" would be an awesome fun gun to shoot!

I have a 450 NE #2 3 1/2" sxs  It's not bad to shoot, I find it fun. The kick is less than a 45-70 guide gun.
