Trapping Skunks
« on: December 25, 2012, 10:02:23 AM »
:)  Howdy! Got a question on trapping skunks. Do they always release scent when caught with a conibear type trap? What would you use for a box set? Maybe a 220? Your views appreciated!  Always, Gene

Gene, they don't always spray when caught in a body gripper.
 I prefer a 160 over the 220,for skunks.

been using the 160's myself for
possums and skunks.
have 5 gallon plastic buckets with
a square hole cut in the lid, and put
the trap propped with rebar in the hole/entrance.
i would imagine the pros can answer better
about the sizes and the pee question.
18 MINUTES.  . . . . . .

160s work great for skunks,  usually right behind the neck catch and most times no spray but at times when they relax when dying the gland muscles relax and release some scent.   220s are to large and get skunk on shoulders  a non killing catch.   Ive caught and killed skunks in 120s set for mink, never moved out of  box used for mink and 120s.  the triggers are all all the way to the side OR bent up in a t close to top of trap... this gives open view for skunk to put his head in and bang!    Good luck  and happy skinning.
