44 Rem mag or 45 Colt
« on: February 14, 2004, 02:38:02 AM »
Forgive my ignorance!!  I am considering one of these calibers. What is the difference between 44 Rem mag and 45 Colt. The case seems to be similar in size. Any info on Bullet speed, trajectory??  I seem to have heard the 44 Rem mag packs a better punch although the 45 Colt looks to have a slightly bigger case. Thanks for any help.

Rogmatt My thoughts on this is the only barrel makes in 45 is the
combination 45/410 that I know of, It gives long lead for 45 colt.
Long ways from bullet to rifleing, not good, So MHO, go with 44 Mag.
If you reload for 45 you equal 44 with 45 but not with factory ammo,
unless you hot loads from some other than Rem, Win ,Fed,  just my thoughts, Marv.

 PS hope this helps.

You can't touch a .44 with a .45.The .44 is a magnum load that was developed to address the shortcomings of the .45. The .45  is probable more fun to shoot just for fun or nostalja but its only avalable in a handi in that not well liked .45/410 barrel, for hunting or just more punch go with the .44 IMHO. 8)

That's it Bob, you're off my Christmas list.

I love my 45 Colt carbine, I got a nice little doe in the freezer courtesy of it this past year.  My loads are pushing a 250gr bullet at 1650 fps out of that 24" barrel.  Good under 100yd whitetail medicine.

Rogmat,
If your not reloading, go with the .44 mag. Both of these cartridges can be handled very easy in a rifle, it's not like trying to hang on to hot loads in a pistol. I shoot the .44 mag. hunting deer with 320 hard cast loads at just over 1600 FPS, and they don't kick much at all in a rifle. The .45 Colt is a great cartridge, but it needs a handloader to get it up to .44 mag. loads, unless your willing to spend a small fortune for premium ammo.

Yep, if you're not reloading, 44mag is the way to go... commercial 45 colt ammo is way expensive and underpowered for the most part.

good luck,

And, if you are thinking about the .45 in a Handi-rifle barrel, that .45/.410 barrel comes with a bead, no provision for scope or rifle sights.  :(  I had one, and had the barrel drilled and tapped for an H&R base.  Never found any load that would group well, but I didn't work on it very hard at it.  With the Survivor stock, it made and interesting "Survival Rifle" package, if there is ever any real use for such for most of us.
