Los Angeles offers groceries for guns in annual buyback  Published December 26, 2012
Associated Press    LOS ANGELES –  Los Angeles police are offering groceries for guns in a buyback program that was moved up in the wake of the Connecticut tragedy.
Police officials will be accepting weapons Wednesday at the LA Memorial Sports Arena and the Van Nuys Masonic Temple.
 
City News Service says weapons can be turned in with no questions asked. Handguns, rifles and shotguns can be exchanged for $100 Ralphs grocery store gift cars. An automatic weapons will earn a $200 card.
The program, designed to get guns off the streets, usually is held in May. Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa accelerated it in the wake of the Dec. 14 shooting that killed 26 people at a school in Newton, Conn.
A buyback last May netted about 1,700 guns.

I wonder how this will work out. People have been using guns to get groceries with for a long time. But with this deal, they don't get to keep the gun, so it only works once.

If the owners of the guns were smart enough to use the free market they would get groceries for a year with the cost of some of the autos vs the $200 they are offered.  I would bet they could get at least 2-10 times more money on most of the guns if they sold them instead of trading them in for scrap

here is how it works........
hoodie  guy steels a gun.....
now he can fence it to the POLICE for $200....no questions....no risk
tax payers  out $200
victim is out their gun
victim buys a newer better gun for $600
gun industry gets  $600....builds a bigger plant
victims brother and cousin realize with the theives out their...they better buy a gun too
gun  industry makes  more profit
and bad guy has a safe place to fence what he steels

I wounder how many were stolen, becouse I would not give any of mine up that cheap. From the picture I saw there were some real nice  rifle , ar and hand guns.

Hey, if you got no investment, it's all profit!  Just collect the money and go steal some more.  Wonder if there is a limit?

What's next, a buyback program for hammers? Doubt many carpenters will show up to turn in their tools of the trade, just like you won't get any real criminals turning in their guns under these programs.
From the pictures I've seen, most of what is turned in is in poor shape or non-functioning.

Like a hoodie is the owner of a 1934 artillery Luger ! And I'm sure a gun like that or a first or second
generation Colt SAA will end up in the scrap pile.

 Some of them aren't quite as successful. This one netted ten whole guns. Garden Grove is a very politically conservative city...
