new to me Huntsman 45 caliber ML
« on: December 26, 2012, 12:12:05 PM »
Ok, so I just baught ($109) a 45 caliber H&R huntsman marked, AS receivered muzzle loader. its got the brass ram rod and a longer handguard with plastic barrel band. its no. 11. I know nothing of the H&R's in the black powder models. As much as I've read is its a '78 model, transfer bar (not sure what that means). Would it be possible for me to throw this barrel on a SB1 frame? or a topper jr frame? 45cal round balls (.457") will not even begin to fit in the barrel, even without a patch. but a patched .430" fits snug... Im so confused...  :-\

I don't know about valuable as I got two here from the classifieds that I thought were too inexpensive to pass up!   :-\   A 45 and a 58!   ;D

Trouble is everybody kept saying "You'll put your eye out with them things!"  And "Those guns are why the old H&R went nipples north!

Don't know how true that is, haven't had a chance to shoot them yet.   :(   I did just get a Lyman mini ball mould for the 58 though!   :P

Lots of em bought and sold in the H&R Classifieds, they aren't rare, of course one that is in like new condition would fetch more money than one in average condition, I looked for it in the BBGV, couldn't find it.

While we're on the subject of Huntsman 45 cal ML's, I was wondering if anybody could tell me what type of primer or cap the one in this link uses.  The barrel is for sale on ebay (I have no connection with the item being sold).

http://www.ebay.com/itm/H-R-Huntsman-45-Cal-Black-Powder-Rifle-Barrel-28-inches-/170963953424?ssPageName=ADME:X:RTQ:US:1123

The seller originally stated #11 caps, then said that it used 209 primers (which seems more logical based on the last photo).  How is this BP removed, also is this an "after market" BP.

Apologies, if this is a little off subject.

definately will. i really want to try to throw it on a SB1 receiver. I threw it on a spare for shiggles and gets and it was snug and fit well. will the SB1 handle it?

Absolutely!

By any chance do you know if he has, or makes a 209 conversion breech plug for a "push in" type Huntsman 45 cal ML?

Good question!   :o   I've got a 45 and a 58 with push in breach plugs!  'course I use holy black so I usually don't have ignition problems.   :-\   But that's with my sidelocks... never shot my Huntsmans.   :-[

I also have never shot my .45Cal Huntsman, because I didn't like using the #11 primers.  Now it's a whole new ball game. ;D

mr ben hubbard makes em.
Great!  I plan on ordering one tomorrow.

OSR, when you get yours let me know what you think.  I like #11's and as I said I don't anticipate really needing a hotter primaer since I use Black Powder.  So there's no hurry for me.   ;)

I ordered 2 a few weeks ago.  Came right away.  The reason I went to 209 primers for my 5 Huntsman is that the caps caused corrosion in the firing pin hole in my first one.  Had to take the firing pin out to clean it up after it froze up.

AtLaw - I ordered the 209 conversion breech plug for the 45 Huntsman on the 14th of January, as of this date, I'm still waiting.  I can't complain tho, it's been 11 degrees outside, not figuring the wind chill factor.  So all things considered, I'm probably happier to be indoors the last couple of days. ;D

fluffy,
That's the conversion for the push in breech plug right?  Is it possible to get a photo posted?  I want to see what it looks like.

Okay, lessee if I remember this all now...  :-\

One can buy a Huntsman push in breech plug that uses the 209 shotgun primer;

Other then the ignition medium it is no different then the existing breech plug;

The extra "fire" is not necessary for the BP I use;

Said plug would allow me to try that new propellant (what is it?  Black something 209?   ??? ) in my huntsmans.

Is that about it?   ???  Sorry guys, still on my first cup of coffee and the caffeine hasn't cut through the senility yet!   ;D

Actually, the one I bought screws in place of the nipple.  The point is that the percussion caps cause corrosion of the firing pin hole (at least on mine) causing things to freeze up.  The 209 doesn't do that since the "fire" is contained.  Unless you live in a open ignition state (I do) changing to primers isn't a big deal.  In an open ignition state, you can bore a hole to let the rain get in and foul your cap.  Oh well...
