GRRRRRRRRR---WIVES!
« on: December 26, 2012, 10:32:51 PM »
You know, one would think that after 50 years of marriage I would be acclimated to the Hens---er---well---her idiocyncercies(SP).
We are going to take this cruise to Alaska this summer and the plans were to enjoy some of the flavor of the NW--which I have wanted to see for a long time.
Now is where it gets interesting---The shortest way to Seattle is 2500 miles according to the web map pages.
We are to arrive back in Seattle on July 23rd and spend 4/5 days in the Washington/Oregon area and mosey back to Houston---key word here is mosey.
Christmas eave she casually mentions that she wants to be home for our grandsons birthday on the 31st.
Why do women have no sense of time? I told her she was going to be flying back and I would see her when I got home.
She was honest that she thought we could do all we wanted and make it back.
ONE of these days she is going to give me the big one!

William you should try one of those gooey ducks (geoduck) while you're there. We wont say what they look like but I see them eating them all the time on tv. They are supposed to be the best tasting shellfish out there. http://www.bing.com/images/search?q=geoduck&qpvt=geoduck&FORM=IGRE

On women, there's just no winning partner. We can't comprehend why they can't comprehend. It's maddening. Just grin and bear it like you've done for 50 years. The good outweighs the bad.  :D

Will, try to impress on her the distance involved in going to Alaska. From Houston Hobby to Seattle
by air alone will kill your entire day. Then up to Alaska by ship ?
Once there in order to take in anything its going to take days for you to do, unless you just stay in
some hotel in Anchorage and read the travel brochures .
You've got jet lag and the stress of large airports, the TSA , and all the hassles that go along with
that. I flew up there out of Midland Tx to Houston and up from there. It took nearly three days to
get acclimated and settled in and they still lost my luggage.
I've never done it by ship, but it sounds like your time restraints are going to be a big factor unless
you can just sit back and enjoy . From what I hear those Cruise ships don't get in a hurry about anything, and I would hate for your wife to find all of this out the hard way.
By finding out it isn't going to be humanly possible to make it back for the birthday and still be in
much shape to enjoy it. Also in July you may have the iceberg factor to deal with, and for obvious
reasons that ship isn't going to be on any strict timeline even if they tell you they are.

I've had friends that booked on Cruise ships headed up there and they told me they were 48 hours
late in getting back to their home port.

It's all your fault for insisting on the trip to Alaska, which she obviously didn't want to do.

If the trip was her idea, it's all your fault for poor planning around important family events.

If she did the planning, then it's the fault of those stupid airlines for being so slow.

I gave her two options. Fly back or change the party date.
I am due out of the hospital tomorrow---but---she has changed the party date.

They all have "a way". That's why you picked her. Ha ha ha  ;)

But it sounds like she's pretty flexible, she changed the party date you said.

No problem now.

Welcome to the CLUB, Mr. Layton! I doubt its an exclusive club. Been married 47 years and some days feel the same way you do. Wish I could offer some solace.........but, I'm apparently as clueless as you are.

I have come to the conclusion that men are clueless.
Clueless as far as how wives reason things. I guess I should have understood that this BD for our grandson was important enugh to take into consideration the time constraints on her and that I HAD considered all, no matter the conversation we had had, and I had factored in her thought even though she had not thought them, which shold have been obvious to me and I should have allowed that she would think them.
See, I have now reasoned why it is my fault.
My head hurts.

WilliamLayton, hang in there. Have strength and forebearance through this time of weakness. Men are not clueless, just subjectively wrong about everything. To be seen as reliably wrong is a liberating thing and you need to embrace it.

My policy has been that a complaint is the same as volunteering to do something. For example, 22 years ago, after we were first married, my wife complained that she didn't like how I was drying and storing the dishes. She wanted things in the places she figured they belonged. Care to guess who has been drying the dishes and putting them away ever since? I still do my share of washing, though. Have not put a dish away since then.

I treated a lot of other little things that way early on too. End result is that we cooperate much better on all the important stuff very well. Dish drying remains a grim reminder of what I will do if pressed.

Another cooperation builder was my phrase "if you're going to complain about how I do something, no matter how I do it, then I'll do it on my terms." After a few spectacular cases of really thorough house cleaning that involved clearing furniture tops of unnecessary dust collectors, the complaints largely stopped and true communication has prevailed since.

WilliamLayton's issue is that he's still living like a newlywed. The problem is that we all do, and it seems to outlive us no matter how long we're married. 50 years just isn't long enough to get the bugs out of a relationship.

There's only one way to argue with a woman'S method of reasoning, with your hat; grab it and run!

Doing things like showing them the facts just makes them angry!  One day when I was a kid, my late father and late mother were in the car and discussing the width of the refrigerator. My father says it's one width. My mother says, "oh no, it's not that wide."

They disagreed and I'm thinking, just let it go father. The facts / truth won't matter.

Sure enough, we get home and he just has to get out a tape measure. He proves it and mother gets a disgusted look on her face, says, "So what!" Then she storms off in a huff.
I don't need to fight to prove I'm right, I don't need to be forgiven, no, no, no (from the song ‘Baba O'Riley’ by The Who)

The alternatives are obvious, and being single now days is no walk in the park. And the older you
get the harder it is. Widowed prople over 50 remind me of people who have been drafted into this.
Divorced people over 50 after awhile always ask me what in the world was I thinking ?
40 years of marriage is a blessing, your significant other has become more a part of you than you
can ever imagine until they are gone. Enjoy them while you can.

Once got told a man has three appropriate responses in a happy marriage.

"Yes, Dear"
"You're right, Dear"
And if you really screwed up, "Yes, you're right, Dear"

He'd been happily married for 42 years at that time.

I once told my wife "You are but a lowly serf in the castle of Lenten." jokingly of course.
She didn't seem to think it was as funny as I did though. ::)
It'll be 23 years for us on April 1st. After all we've been through together I can't imagine life without her.

Anna
All--well most--of this in jest, for me.
When I met Ann, in College I knew she was solid. I had dated lots of other girls, some looking for their MRS. degree (and that is not bad--it was a different day), some were obviously just out for a good time, some it was their first time away from family and a small town and they had an agenda.
I had been around the block and I knew what I needed, I needed a solid block to weather the turmoils. We were married a year after I met her. Ann was 18 and she graduated from Sam Houston in 2 1/2 years---took 18 hours in each of two summer semesters.
There is no doubt in my mind that she could have shot me at high noon on Saturday on the Court House Square and not a jury in Texas would have convicted her.
I love her, though I can't show it as I should most of the time.
BUTTTTT-dang it all, she just has a way.

Will I know its all in jest, venting about a spouse sometimes is a good way to come full circle.
But things have a way of taking care of themselves and you handled yourself very well.
That was a great story though about how you two met, Ann sounds like a strong woman and she
sure corralled you at an early age. There is a period in the life of a woman where they are much
more mature than a man of the same age is. We all have seen this and most men do admit to that.
But over time the male does catch up and a nurturing affect comes into play.

Thus comes about what men mean by saying ( my better half ). That's the beauty of a male and
female relationship, each gives the other segments of who they are that otherwise they wouldn't
have. God knew what he was doing as I'm sure you know. Over time once no longer there this fact
comes home full bore. It's really seen in the widowed, where one partner passes away and for no
aparent reason the other one soon follows. It's as if something so basic to the surviving spouse has
been removed and they can not exist without it. We still do not know much about this from a scientific
aspect. But I prefer to think that God just brings the survivor home as watch them suffer.

I watched this with my dad, and it put a strain on everything I knew or could do just to keep him
from giving up. He still has his moments and he thinks I don't see them but i do. It's like in the
movie second hand lions. Where that man would go into a trance like state remembering his
departed wife. This really happens guys, blood pressure drops, heart rate becomes erratic, and
those around him are faced with a serious problem. This is how it manifest itself in the men.
The women are a different story, they become withdrawn and seemingly helpless. They openly
live in the past and have mulible problems when dealing with everyday life. Simple things they
once did without a second thought, become insurmountable obstacles of not knowing what to do.

Theirs become a long and drawn out affair usually effecting thier mental possesses more than
anything else. This effects thier physical well being as if they are waisting away. Family support
can be crucial at this time, but many times it just isn't enough and the family's attempt to have
her committed or placed into an old folks home. I do NOT commit in these cases or recommend
a place in a retirement community. The family's become very agitated with me over this, but this
poor woman at a painful time in her life sees things in her offspring that she is powerless to stop.
Not aways, but Will I swear sometimes I want to commit the family's !
