(WHAS11) -- An online petition to label the Kansas based Westboro Baptist church a hate group already has more than 250,000 signatures.

The church is known for picketing funerals for soldiers, and more recently, members protested the site of the Connecticut school shooting.

According to the petition, the church targets homosexuals, the military and other religions. It is the most supported single petition ever on the White House site.

I'm a firm believer in the 1st amendment "EXCEPT" when it causes grieving by parents of soldiers etc.
they step way over the line and should NEVER be allowed at a funeral.  that is a private affair.

Wow! I went over to the site to sign the petition and they already have over 278,000 signatures! Way more than enough to get someones attention...hopefully. I'm also a firm believer in the First Amendment, however, I've never believed that their practice of protesting funerals was protected. I expect you won't see them at too many, if any, Southern funerals!

I think that labeling them as a hate group is a mistake. Should they continue their dastardly behavior, I think that the public will most certainly eventually deal with them. This is ok with me.

When you start stepping on others rights( no matter how vile they are)  it will eventually come back to you.

What bothers me is they think they have to do God's work because he is unable.  Some of what they protest I agree with, BUT;


Freedom of speech is part of the guarantee to also have your own religious beliefs, and to assemble peacefully.  Someone who disrupts a funeral is violating both.

I am reluctant to call them a church, their motives in my opinion are not directed through the Spirit of God.
The first ammendment must stand and labeling them a hate group unfortunately treads on that right. I think the Patriot Riders walling them off during a funeral is a good idea. Grieving families should not have to put up with them.
These folks may call themselves christians but I believe they are more the spirit of the anti christ; meaning they drive folks away from Christ.

Cheesehead is onto something here - the Westboro Gang positively hates gays, and considers their hatred righteous & shared by God. Their contempt is, in their view, God-approved. They detest atheists. They call abortion murder. And... they have a overwhelming hatred for President Obama.

For some of us it is the fact that they are here and perhaps if they are introduced to the Almighty God their lives may change. Jesus never taught against homosexuality becuase it is understood it is wrong and not part of Father God's creation model.

They can believe whatever they want. They can protest whatever they want. But, when it comes to protesting AT A SERVICEMAN'S FUNERAL, that's where I draw the line. I wouldn't care if they protested the funeral, as long as it was somewhere else. Their right to protest does not override the family and friends' right to have some peace while their loved one is laid to rest in their chosen last rites. I seem to remember some Texas A&M students forming a human wall against the WBC protesters at one funeral and a biker club doing the same at another. Now THAT'S newsworthy!

Yes I have read Romans. Romans is part of the New Testament written by Paul. Jesus wasn't teaching Paul (definitely inspired by the Holy Spirit) was. I do wholeheartedly agree homosexuality is wrong.

What is truly at stake is the first ammendment, think about it for a minute. Unfortunately labeling westboro is a strike against it. As Americans we cannot allow it the Bill of Rights to be abolished not any of it. When one part of it falls the rest is soon to follow.

  I wonder why this group was never cited for "disturbing the peace" at these funeral's? Free speech was never meant to disturb anyone's right to privacy, and a funeral is as private as it gets. I myself, if I was presiding would be tempted to "lay hands on them suddenly" and "pray for forgiveness" after!
I agree, they have the right to protest, etc., but at a different location. Can anyone tell me why they have never (if so, I don't know) been charged with disturbing the peace and made to disperse?

i am far more concerned with the left's tendency to take a response like this and run with it. is what the westboro group's doing wrong? absolutly! it's a black mark against any religious group in existance. the problem is, there are far more insidious groups that will run with a petition like this and use it to censor (politically correct speech?) any other religiously affilliated group that has a disagreement with the way the 'leadership' is directing. i've been concerned about this group of idiots ever since they first hit the protest scene, and this is exactly what i was afraid they would cause!!!

 My understanding of Petitions of this sort is that is really just a "poll of sorts", not a tool of legislature. It takes a certain amount of signatures on any real Petition to get an issue, etc. placed on a Ballot for an election. Then the voters do their thing, i.e. that's how they got Legalized Pot, etc. I'm sure everyone here is aware of this, it seems we are all just hopping mad at these idiots for disrespecting other's Rights, in this case the funerals of Servicemen.
