Anyone have an idea on how many grains and which powder to use in a .50 cal traditions kentucky pistol? I will use it for plinking and possibly some small game hunting.
Thank you

didn't have any paperwork with instructions
and load info?
i would think max would likely be around
70, but you will want to look in the
lyman black powder handbook to get
a suitable load.
3f or equiv. would be your powder.
keep in mind it's a close range proposition
for hunting.

.490 round ball
.015 patch
"Most Accurate" 20-25 grains 3F
"Maximum" 45 grains 3F

I shoot a traditions trapper. Same pistol, different grip basically. I shoot 20gr of 3f behind a .490 ball and a .015 patch. Over 30gr and you just end up with more fire, smoke and fouling.

My .50 calibre pistol sports a 12 inch barrel. When I take it out, it shoots a .490 roundy, patched with pillow ticking and a 36 grain load of fffg...at 25 yards I can hit boiled eggs at the shooting line fairly consistantly.
On small game its a hoot to shoot.

I have a Lyman Plains pistol. I shoot 40 grains of 3f black powder with a patched .490 ball. It's very accurate at 25 yards.
