Quick detach scope rings, how well do they work?
« on: February 14, 2004, 05:21:22 AM »
I am thinking about quick detach scope rings on my 7600 so that I can use both open sights and a scope(I can't stand see through mounts). How well do they work? Do they always return to zero? Is there a specific brand you guys reccomend. Thanks.

Terry, I have not read one claim from a QD ring manufacturer that will claim 100% return to zero. I have read several tests that have indicated 90% return (9 out of 10 times) to correct zero. At no time during the test did the zero wander more than 1" off. It seems to me the tests were of Talley and Leupold Quick-Release rings (not Weaver type). I do not use them as I have no open sigts on either rifle I now have. That said I do believe I would get the Talley rings and bases and get the screw type QD rings. (no lever to get knocked loose in the brush and seems more dependable)

Terry1 - I've got the Warne QD rings and bases on one of my rifles and the Leupold QD rings and bases (not the QRW ones) on another one. Either one is an excellent mounting system. I've not had any trouble with the point of impact changing after removing and replacing the scope after sighting in the iron sights. I also use the X/S scout scope mount on my 1895G and the only trouble I've ever had with that one is making sure to put it back into the correct slots on the mount (I've marked the front one now so that's not a problem anymore).  Dave in WV is right, I've read those test results too but I've never seen that much of a variance (maybe I was lucky). The levers do hang up if your not careful but their easier to remove in the field, especially if you forgot the screwdrivers or left your coins back at camp! The secret is to have them pointing down and back towards you. Good luck :D  CEJ..
If I can't take my rifles with me, I don't want to go!
