custom shop is no more
« on: December 29, 2012, 12:59:30 PM »
I was doing some looking and I see a notice on the Ebco web site that the TC custom shop is closed better known as Fox Ridge and will be no more and they are taking up the slack for custom orders on Barrels, I do know that Ed bought a lot of the Fox ridge stuff. Anyone know anything more on this?

It's been closed for some time.

Yes I understand but there was some talk that they were going to reopen once the move was made and everything was ready.

I think that is what the bean counters told the good people at Fox Ridge, sad.

I don't believe S&W wanted to hurt the sale of existing Contender inventory so they kept their intentions quiet. I heard the Contender and possibly Encore is next.
Its the end of an era for T/C

With all the aftermarket stuff being available for the Encore and Contender I can see why T/C's custom shop wasn't profitable.  With the hefty prices on new Encore and Contender barrels, one can go to Match Grade Machine and probably get a better barrel for not that much more.

I don't see the Encore going anywhere unless T/C goes out of business.

I think you mean Smith and Wesson?  T/C  seems to be nothing but a product line now.

I love the contender line and the encore's but most of my friends want a second and third shot thats the mentality of the common shooter now days. So goes the market following the trend. Top that off with executives running companies with the attitude of not enough profit shut it down, I'm not surprised what goes on in smith and wesson's world doesn't mean we have to follow the trend. When one door closes another opens thats where little companies make their nitch in the business, I have a feeling Ed's, MGM and many others can expect there sales to go up.

With Ruger owning Pine Tree Casting, im surprised that the Contender and Encore line wasn't bought by them.. Probably would have been if Bill was still alive.

Once upon a time, Bill made a prototype that looked a lot like a Contender with a Blackhawk grip, but he scraped it and came out with the Hawkeye instead.

The Contender has not been made since the move. Try finding a stainless steel G2 frame. Will see in a few days after the Shot Show to see if it is in the the 2013 catalog. I hope it is still there.
The VP of sales says that the will do limited runs of barrels from the S&W Performance Center. I would have to say that they would be Encore barrels. And date not said and no specs.

Their web page is still active, although they removed the link from the home page.

If anyone wants a G2 frame they need to give ED a call ASAP. S&W is not going to make any more.

And how do we know that for sure?

The Contender is still in the 2013 catalog but a comment made there makes you wonder about the Contender. They have not been making the Blued Encore's and was asked why. They said space and production time is at a premium. So, higher sale items get the time. With that said makes you wonder about the Contender since none have been made since the move. The 2013 catalog does not have the Icon of any style and Hawken listed anymore.

Uncertain times we are living in. Fortunately I have everything I need. Extra frames, barrels, and plenty of ammo & components.

But it sounds like lots of guys were asleep at the wheel.  ;)
