Buttstock Medallions
« on: December 30, 2012, 06:55:57 AM »
How could I get a custom buttstock medallion made for my Handi Grendel?

Here's a patch depicting the Grendel. Ain't she a beauty?  ;D

Thanks, Dinny

one of those specialty shops
that make metal cut-outs in different
shapes with a cnc plasma or a
cnc water-jet should be able to
make whatever you want. may
be cost-prohibitive for set-up
though.  ? ? ?
if they can, you can inlet it and
fill the voids with colored epoxy
to match the patch.
18 MINUTES.  . . . . . .

Dinny check with the local trophy shops in Lawton and OKC. Most of them now have computer engraving machines that can duplicate just about anything.Just take them a jpeg file copy of it and they can duplicate it on a medallion.
Shouldn't cost much more than the rifle ;D

Dinny,

Just an idea, but most large universities have large art departments.  (Maybe community colleges as well.)  Most of these departments offer courses in metal casting, primarily in brass and bronze.

Go to the school, find the Art Deparment building, find the big bulletin board, and put an ad up, offering to pay an artist to make you a simple brass medallion, with a dragon's head on it, with you providing  a picture of the dragon.  (Don't  complicate it by using the word Grendel.)   If you can find the teacher of the class, the teacher might be interested as well.  Alot of the people who teach these courses are just "adjunct" professors, which means that they've been hired by the college to teach only this one course, for very little money.

The artist will first make a carving of it, then make a mold from the carving, and then pour in the brass, and then clean up the edges.  Personally, if they could do it in peuter, I think that that would be better.  Also ask about German Silver.

Art students (and teachers) are always starving for money, but I think you're gonna have to pay a couple of hundred to get their attention.

My brother in law taught industrial arts at a small college in Pennsylvania.  He was alwasy casting brass candlesticks and peuter cups.  Apparently no big deal.  So, a simple medallion should be possible.  Don't be looking for multiple colors, like the red eyes.  Way too complicated.

Best, Mannyrock

Remember those classy old bicycle badges on the front neck, often brass relief, sometimes painted. I know of a guy who does those with an etching process for restorations and new designs. Pretty sure he could & would do it. IIRC the depth of the etching is dependent upon the time left in the bath or repeated baths and the thickness of the brass stock.

Dinny,

I thought this was the current (company) patch for the 6.5Grendel.  I did see the thread talking about the design of the patch that you have.  It turned out really nice.

I like that one better! I wonder if I would have to get anyone's permission to replicate the design??

This I am interested in!

Regarding the bicycle badges, pure brass is mighty soft, and I remember as a child that those badges would dent and scratch in a hearbeat.

Good point! I have a few options to look at. If they're cheap enough I may get a few different ones to see which would work the best.

Thanks, Dinny

Would a laser engraving do the trick? Simply have the stock laser engraved. It ain't a medalion but...

Quite possibly, especially if some paint could be added afterwards and coated over with a layer of poly for protection. Do you know of a company that can do that?

Thanks, Dinny

I will get the contact info for the chap and you can bounce it off him. I think he could just as well work with thicker brass stock and still get the surface etching without the denting problem. I think he does the artwork, puts down a wax (or something layer), scrapes away were he want the etch and into the etching solution.; old-school, yes? Cheap, no, not likely, but his stuff is very nice.

Ya know Dinny, I'd like to see a GBO Handiholic medallion.  I'd pop the ones off the stocks that have medallions now, replace it with the HandiHolic and change back if I sold the stock, unless the buyer wanted it.  I've got the hat.  The shirt is coming next 8)   I'm trying hard to qualify ::)
