I needed some flints...
« on: December 30, 2012, 08:20:30 AM »
I recently purchased my first rocklock, a slightly used Pedersoli Frontier 54 cal. While waiting for the weather to clear , and after reading so much on flint types, I decided to order a few to try. I decided to try Stonewall Creek Outfitters cause I've heard of uniformity issues with flints from other places. Well SCO is a small mom and pop business where you end up talking to the proprietors directly on the phone. I spoke to Troy, who was very helpful, and he got me all fixed up. I received my order within 3 days from talking with him, every one of the dozen (6 Black English/6 French Amber) were very uniform, and all I believe to be serviceable. I'm posting this because I'm more than happy with the folks at Stonewall Creek Outfitters and wanted to spread the word.

I never looked farther than Track for flints.  Their catalog depicts life size photos so you can get exactly what you want.
Congrats on the Pedersoli.  A beautiful rifle.
When choosing flints (you didn't ask for this advice so forgive me if it's too much info) get them so that when they are locked in place and the rifle at half cock, the flint is very close to the frizzen, but not touching.  A sharp and well positioned flint and a vent hole properly made to match the pan, and the right amount of priming (just enough to cover the bottom of the pan) is as fast or faster than a percussion gun.

All advice is appreciated. Been insuring that all the things that you mentioned are implemented.

I've drilled my touch hole liner to .0664 with a 1/16" bit and installed a nice Black English flint that sits about an 1/8" off the frizzen.

Now if the dag gum weather would cooperate I'll shoot the darn thing.

I didn't go with Track cause I've heard that the English had been a crap shoot on how well they were knapped.

I have been buying flints from Rich Pierce. His are white, I think they are actually chert. The last time I bought some he said he finds the stone and knaps them himself. They are every bit as durable as Tom Fuller black english flints and a heck of a lot cheaper.
Hi NSA! Can you see how many fingers I am holding up?
