Dick’s Sporting Goods customers are threatening a class-action lawsuit after the company allegedly refused to fill gun orders made weeks before the school shooting in Newtown, Conn.

Dick’s announced just before Christmas that it was suspended sales of rifles out of respect for the victims of the school shooting. But some customers allege the company is also refusing to honor sales made the day after Thanksgiving.
 
And thousands have joined a Facebook page calling for a boycott of the company.
“What makes this situation even more frustrating is that I am a law enforcement officer and purchased this rifle specifically to use while on duty,” a gun owner told Military Times. “My agency allows us to carry rifles, but cannot afford to issue one to every member.”
“It’s unacceptable,” customer Troy Blackall told CBS 11 News in Dallas.
Blackall and his wife paid for two Troy Carbines – but they only got one. Instead, he said the company sent him a refund and a gift card.
“The gun prices have doubled and tripled in price now. So it’s not like we can get our money back and buy the guns someplace else.”
He said he would sign on to a class action lawsuit “in a heartbeat.”
Dick’s Sporting Goods did not return calls seeking comment.
 
Russell Kellner and his wife only received one of the three semi-automatic rifles they bought.
“It ain’t a good deal when you don’t get it,” he said. “So I’m not happy at all about it.”
Instead, the Kellners received a $100 gift card and a Christmas Eve letter from Dick’s — telling them the company would not be fulfilling any more orders.
Kellner told CBS 11 News Dick’s should not have changed their policy until after filling orders.
“Do what you said,” he told the television station. “Do what you advertised. Make good on it.”
 
Customers aren’t the only ones upset over Dick’s decision.
The founder of gun manufacturer Troy Defense put his outrage in writing — on the company’s Facebook page.
Stephen Troy said he was “deeply dismayed and shocked to hear” about Dick’s “anti-gun” decision. The company had invested millions of dollars to provide their rifles to Dicks’s under an exclusive contract.
 
“DSG did not contact or inform Troy of this decision prior to notifying the public,” he wrote. “Nor was Troy informed by DSG that cancellation letters were being sent to customers.”
The website Twitchy compiled a list of critics who posted their displeasure on Twitter — many calling for nationwide boycotts of the store.

Especially around here, a handshake is a legal contract between two people. And if you shake someone's hand you had better deliver or they can file damages against you and win.
Those of you who watch Pawn Stars , have you ever noticed how reluctant Rick is to shake hands

I have never bought a firearm from Dick's or from ChinaMart and I never will. I would rather pay a little more at the local small shop where they usually know my name when I walk in the door and I can speak to someone who actually knows what they are talking about.

Me too. My guns are from my local gun shops. The guys that run them are friends now, I've known them for a long time.

We can only hope this bites them in the azz. They need to pay a stiff penalty for being "sunshine patriots".
 
I read them for thier true colors years ago and would only cross their threshold when the wife was shopping for hen stuff and I could no longer take the punishment. By and large the help was of little use and the outdoors merchandise was shoddy and scant to boot. The ocassional loss leader ammo sales, or bottom tier Remmy guns held little appeal to me. they are Gander wanna be's and that ain't meant to be a compliment.

 If you rely on a handshake and it goes to court, you'd better have a witness with an excellent memory on your side and hope that your opponent doesn't have one who's an excellent liar.

here in indiana, dicks did a backdoor deal to by out galyans, and it was a pretty poor deal at that. galyans was a fairly full service 'outdoor sports' retailer. kind of a local version of gander, and dicks turned the enterprise into a second rate wanna be. galyans got into hot water over the deal, too, because of tax abatements and job promises that were'nt carried forward. the tax abatement talks were timed after the decision to sell was known, as far as i can tell. so much for integrity in busieness.

We had one Gaylans store near me. I went there a few times. It seemed to be a decent store and they carried ***gasp!*** handguns! Dicks took it over and now it is a 2 floor yuppie clothing store. Not even worth  opening the door to go into. They quit carrying handguns and I read a press release from Dicks somewhere that stated that Dicks believes in "family values" and therefore will not sell handguns. Pure B.S.

I've never understood outrage in situations like these. Don't get me wrong, I'm not criticizing anyone here for their anger, I'm just saying I don't understand it. When a store "of any name", decides to change policies that I don't agree with, I simply stop doing business with them. I now know where they stand, and we aren't standing in the same circle (figuratively).
If I understand THIS particular situation, the store DID REFUND the customers whom ordered guns their money back. To me that's fair, and the money can now be BETTER SPENT, elsewhere. Like it or not, this Dick's IS A PRIVATELY OWNED STORE. They CAN do what the want, It IS their business.
I'm an old guy, and remember when WalMarts started opening up around here. I said they would drive the little man out. Most folks said: It's free enterprise, and the little man should lower HIS prices if he wants our business. They didn't realize that WalMart bought cheaper in BULK, and the little man couldn't. Now the little man in many circumstances is gone, and we all know where WalMart has gone.
When I was a youngster back in the sixties, and very early seventies, I sold gasoline for my Grandfather. He owned two INDEPENDENT gas stations. YOU OTHER OLD TIMERS REMEMBER THOSE? We sold gas cheaper than any major company, and we sold lots of it. Then the major brands came in, an started a "gas war", to drive us out, and then did. They sold it cheaper than it cost them, and when we went out of business, they ran prices up even higher, and have ever since. Folks would stop me on the street, and say: We miss your cheaper prices. Why don't you open up again? I would tell them: You shoulda thought of that when you switched to the big boys. Their intent was obvious.
People now days want CONVENIENCE, and it just wasn't convenient to go to the little man, so good ole Dick got the nod. Now they don't like what they got from Dick. Or in this case what they DIDN'T get.
Folks that won't buy guns at WalMart, WILL BUY groceries there. They think their protestin. But they ain't. Just like Texaco, Exxon-Mobil. WalMart, and DICK, won. And they most likely will keep winning, cause folks don't care like they used to. They claim they do, but their actions speak a lot louder than their claims. That's why our government is in the shape it's in. Folks claim their tired of the cheatin, but the candidates get sorrier every year, and folks still keep votin for'em. Poop really does roll down hill. Right on the lazy little man.

Dick's made a contract to provide a product for a certain price.  Now that price has risen and I can't purchase it for the original price that had been agreed to.  Private Company or not, they owe me the product at the agreed to price.  Just like a stock transaction.  Refunding me my money does not make me whole.

My first call would be to my attorney. Thankfully,  I haven't ever been in a Dick's.  What would you have done if you had a contract to buy gas at lets just say $1000.00 a truck load.  Them they ringed and you had to pay 10,0000.00 a truck load for the same product from another source.  We sure Dick's is not trying to get out of the transaction with out a loss.  Their prices my have gone up if they did not have a commitment for weapons at the price they "sold" them for.

That's answer is simple. We didn't buy the gas, and went out of business, then smiled at all the whining that could have been avoided, had the customers been loyal, rather than save 3 cents a gallon.
 
To put this in context, I said at the very beginning I wasn't criticizing anyone (including you) for being upset. I said that folks are all about convenience, and they got bit by a store that most likely uses the guns as a draw for folks that would not normally come in there. I would imagaine that most of Dick's profit DOES NOT come from the few guns they sell.
 
Like WalMart. From cheese, and meat, to beer, to rifles, and shotguns. One-stop-shop! The folks that stop goin in Dick's over the gun issue, will most likely not even be noticed. Anyone that has ever had a gun dealers license knows what a hassle it is from both the ATF AND gun buyers, and in recent years, NEW MEDIA.
 
Everyone has to do, what they think they need to.

Simply put, if you don't like the way business is ran don't shop there. I support the local small merchants whenever possible. I haven't been to walmart or kmart in ages. We get groceries from albertsons. I would rather do business with the small merchant. They know you are the bread and butter for their table. The big stores you are just another number. So take your pick is the one stop shop better for your convenience or do you like the personal service of the smaller stores?

I can about imagine the raincheck agreement has some legalize tucked in somewhere that specifically addresses this very thing. A company the size of these dicks would certainly have an lawyer involved in this long before any anouncement was made.
