Hatfield rifle value? History?

Anyone know the value of these, where they were made etc.? My buddy has a 50 caliber percussion Hatfield mint, has never been fired, he bought it used in 1987, it was drilled for a peep sight by the previous owner, cant find info onthem. Thanks, Craig

i've only seen and handled one,
probably was in the '80s


looked to me just like the pedersoli
squirrel rifle i have that cabelas listed
as the blue ridge rifle and pedersoli
lists as their frontier rifle, except the
hatfield had premium wood and was
fit way better. (if i remember right)


it may not be pedersoli, but they sure are similar.
and i gave i think probably a third of what
a hatfield cost for my d.p.

I remember the hatfield rifles. They were hand made on a limited basis.  been a while since I've seen one for sale so hard to judge current prices.
They also produced a nice 20 gauge double shotgun. Not a muzzleloader but a cartridge gun.

I had one in the eighties.  A flintlock.  Beautiful wood.  But the stock beneath the barrel was too blocky.  It had sort of a triangle shape to it, wide at the bottom and tapering up on each side.  I liked the gun, but the unauthentic stock detracted from it, I thought.

I had one in the 1980s.  It was accurate.  The manual states they should never be disassembled.  After I took the barrel out of the stock and put it back together it never functioned properly again.  Here are some opinions.

Buyer beware! I had one very briefly. It was an absolute peice of garbage. Poor fit poor finish and poor function. From what I have read the quality varies wildly with earlier models being better. From what I have read mine was a very late model and probably among the last they made before they sold the design off to Pedersoli. The shop I bought it from was very reliable and they sent it to a gunsmith twice on their dime and then bought it back from me for what I paid after the 3rd hiccup. They then offered it to me for a hundred bucks. I wish I would have taken them up on it because at that price it would have been worth tinkering with but I was so frustrated with it that I wanted nothing more to do with it. I never even got to fire it. I've talked to a few of the guys at the Log Cabin Shop and they didnt seem to hold Hatfield Rifles in very high regard.
