I got religion...
« on: December 30, 2012, 10:51:29 PM »
Or at least a religious candle.  :)

Been seeing these 8" tall x 2" diameter candles in glass at the dollar store for a while but Saint Francis of Assisi or someone was pasted on them to block out the light.

Recently they've had blank white ones so I bought one to test out. After ~40 hours burning it's only ~1/2 way down inside the glass. No wax running down the outside like a bare candle. Not bad for a buck, and when it's done you still have the glass for something or other...

Those are real popular with Mexicans and any store that caters to them will have a bunch.  I've found a few that are in plain clear glass.

Anyway I find it just as cheap to make my own candles in old glass jars...  Not so deep as to be hard to light but deep enough to burn for awhile.

Those work great!  The religious figures on them don't interfere with the burning.

I would also recommend that you look into the "100-hour" emergency candles...which are actually little lamps that use liquid paraffin.  I bought a few from Emergency Essentials when they put them on special several months ago.  Haven't found a source for bulk liquid paraffin, to refill them, in the area yet.

I also save all the remains of candles that we use (and that I can scavenge) and when I get enough I make new ones just by melting the old wax and pouring it into otherwise-unusable glass jars.  Wick is available in most hobby stores, especially Hobby Lobby.  These "recast" candles may have some odd colors, but work just fine.

I also have several alcohol lamps that were formerly used in my Science labs, as an absolute last resort.  WTH.

We have a lumber/home products store in Wisconsin. Know you are far away from us, but this may help others in my area and show you a product name to search for.

Is it possible to refill the Emergency Essentials lamps?

Thanks, Billy

I don't think I could make one for a buck, considering materials + my high cost American labor.  ;)

Actually, I've been sorta lazy in looking for the "lamp oil" because I have several working kerosene lanterns and a local source of fuel.  Yesterday, I found a source of lamp oil about 35 miles away in a town we visit frequently.  It's twice as expensive "per gallon" as kerosene, but has twice the "burn rate".  Oh, well....

Yes, the Emergency Essentials stuff can be refilled.

Actually, one can make a serviceable lamp/lantern out of just about any glass reservoir.  Check out W. T. Kirkman Lanterns, Inc, product #2009...a lamptop that fits on a Mason-style jar.

Thanks for the Emergency Essentials refill tip and the Kirkman Lanterns info.  Something to check out.

I'm a nut for candles and oil lamps. I used to pick up used candles from churches, etc and remelt. I enjoyed it but my wife said I got a bit excessive so I got rid of the stuff. I pick up candles all the time cheap, I have a full plastic box like you'd store clothes in + a bunch more. I give en out in emergencies to any who are in need.
Oil lamps?? Guilty. Gobs of them, I especially like the small ones, they were the original nite  lites of years ago, still are in a power failure. I use nothing but K- kerosene, anout $4 gal. Lamp oil at WM was about $7 1/2 gal last I saw. I don't see any difference in the burning rate. I burn several small ones every night because I like them.
Almost forgot. I looked at walmart the other day and they have the tea lite candles at $2.25 per 50, thats cheap. They easily burn for 5 + hours. POWDERMAN.  ;D ;D

i use oil lanterns at the farm cuz
the co-op electric goes out quite
a lot. had to saturday.
use a lot of the tea light doo-dads
too. find a bag of 100 for a couple
of dollars. use them for short term
spot lighting inside a small jar.

wouldn't be a fan of the steel-wool wick
deal. too much chance for a out of control
fire. if you didn't already know, steel wool
will burn very hot and the little sparks
will go everywhere. too unsafe for me :(

Funny you should mention that. I have an old box of 3 plumber's candles made by General Wax & Candle Co. here on my display shelf of antique household items. Price printed on the box is 29 cents.

I googled the name and the company is still in business, at the same address listed on the box I have here. They still make the same plumber's candles today. Same product number even.  :)
