Sportster .17HMR vs Nickel at 100 Yards...
« on: December 31, 2012, 01:29:48 PM »
Took the ,17HMR Sportster out today, sighted in the Pentax Gameseeker III 9X50MM Scope. Shot 100 rounds to make sure I got a real good sight in ;)
Very impressed in myself, but most of all...the .17HMR. I thought my brothers Ruger 10/22 was spot on, but damn. There is alot to be said for these .17's. Unbelievable accuracy. 22's don't stand a chance...

let's see some coyotes ;)

What would you say is the biggest game that these little .17's can drop effectively ? Really only heard of people using these for ground squirrel sized animals.
And thanks alot man, I can't wait to get it on a rifle rest down at the range and due the final tweaking :D

There not bad for coyotes a lot of guys use them on prairie dogs too I had one I used for coyotes for awhile until I got my 5mm back up and running now I use a .204 ruger or my handi .223 but I killed 7 I think with the .17 all within 60 yards I've heard they don't do so well past 100 yards or so on yotes

I about took a beaver's head off with a 17 at 100 yds.  No doubt it will kill a coyote.

That's impressive.  I have a nickel my dad shot with a .22 LR when I was a kid and it's only dented...

My brother owns a Ruger 10/22. Our last trip out with our rimfire rifles we were aiming for a silver dollar sized coin I got from Petersen 4 Wheel Drive, which was solid brass. I continued to pierce my .17HMR rounds right through it. My brothers .22LR at 75 yards was only denting it. It's amazing how much more velocity and penetrating power these HMR's have than the .22LR's.

I have a Marlin 17 HMR that a friend traded to me for one of my guns. It sat in the safe for years and one day I decided to put a Swift Premier scope on it. When I shot ground squirrels with it at around 60 yds they mostly just flopped over dead. One that I shot never even twitched, dead as a rock. When I shoot them with my Ruger 10/22 they often flop around until they disappear down a hole.  I am so impressed with the 17 HMR that I suspect my 22's will be lonely widows from now on.

The 17 HMR is fun, not really enough for Coyotes, you need to go a lot faster with a 17 for them.  This a quarter from my 17 Remington, starts out about 4,000fps.  Larry

I've had nothing but success on coyotes and especially foxes with my sportster .17 HMR.  Took 4 coyotes last year from 35 to 153 yards - all one shot kills.  6 fox, 15 feet to 50 yards - one shot each too.  My favorite fox caliber - no damage to pelts whatsoever.

Granted there are better calibers for knocking down a big coyote, but with good shot placement (all mine but one were broadside) the little .17 will do the job.

Love the accuracy of my sportster too!

Good shooting,

Mike

Unfortunately where I hunt, options are rimfire or shotgun.  So far the 17 has the nod in rimfire.

+1 Ben!

The 17 Hornet looked good to me but it's still a center firer.   :-\   That new rimfire may be the answer to our problems!   ;D

Say Larry, how did you go about fixing or mounting your quarter to stay stationary while firing at it? Or did you just shoot it each time and reset it?

The bulllet is so fast that the quarter will just sit there, I just put it behind the target against the back board and it never moves.  Larry

Really? Because even at 100 yards, when I hit both nickels they flew about a good 5-10 feet away from the original target area. I thought for sure I wasn't going to find them. Then again I did just have it propped up on a wood round with a stick :P

Superglue?
See, this is why I like to milk other peoples mind for opinions/thoughts.
Since I usually use wood rounds as my backstop for my bullets, maybe not Superglue, but Gorilla Glue ( a little more wood friendly).

Thanks for the suggesiton Crank! I was gonna go out shooting today but plans fell through. Hopefully next weekened (my next day off) I will go out plinking!
