Gun safe recommendations
« on: January 01, 2013, 12:02:07 AM »
What recommendations do y'all  have on a quality gun safe. Been online researching and there are a lot of manufacturers making safes. How are they secured to the floor or wall to prevent being carried out and how easy are they to get into by by thieves? Are they worth the money?

I have only one of the thin walled school locker types screwed to the wall from inside.  It does have 2 of those funny keys with the half notches in a circle.  It is not fire proof, and now doesn't hold all the long guns I own, and pistols fit even worse.  If you have anything valuable you may want a fire rated one.

FYIW, some California guys I talked to, tell of the police hauling ALL the safe in if they are called for anything.  First, they ask to look.  The answer is no.  When they come back with a warrant, usually, the safe holds only a BB gun.

I have given a thought to building some sort of hidden storage, just can't figure how to make something that actually blends in, and still can be entered easily without marking up the camo, making it obvious.  I figure that one day there will be powder sniffing dogs coming around anyway, so then that will still not work.
just because you're paranoid doesn't mean they are not watching you

Buy bigger than you think you will need.  You can store other valuables in it too.

James gave you some good advice about buying bigger then you need right now. You will buy more guns and you will keep other valuables in there too. Everyone you will talk to about a gun safe will tell you the same thing.

FPH is also right about getting into a safe. There is no gun safe out there that will keep someone out if you have the right tools. A gun safe can only stop the amateur thieves and slow down the professional thieves. In my case they only have a few minutes until the house alarm goes off. Even if the police take there good ole time getting here. The noise will certainly scare the hell out of them and wake the neighbors. The horn is outside as well as inside the house.

I have the Franklin 45 model by Liberty safes. It's not the top of the line but it is a good safe with fire protection. I bought it about 10 years ago.

Do a lot of research.  There are $5000 safes that can be defeated fairly easily if you know a few tricks.

 These are very good...

Most all cheapo gun safes and "security cabinets" are total false security. Hard to understand why someone would store several thousand dollars worth of valuables in a $500 safe. Okay to keep curious grandkids away from your stuff but not much else.

A safe should only be part of an overall security program. A friend of mine had a very expensive safe that all the world could see every time he opened his garage door. Notice that I said "had." :(  If you don't bolt it down, it's like buying an alarm system and never arming it.

I've heard good things about these: http://www.bearsafes.com/

I don't own one. I believe that they will let you trade it back it in at full purchase price on and larger safe if you outgrow it and want to upgrade.

I'm going to use a gang box lined with a double layer of fire rock sheet rock.  This is only to discourage and slow someone down.

I agree with James!  Have shelving for wills, bank papers, handguns, emergency money, coins and gold which might be handy if the worse happens.  What ever size you buy it will fill up, as James says buy bigger than you think you need!!

I bought a cannon fat boy (48 gun)when they were on sale a tractor supply, which they are every fall . At 610 lbs + guns it wouldnt be to easy for someone to steal, but then again they would probably sue ya if they tried and ended up getting hurt.

I searched all around several years ago when I bought mine.  Tractor Supply beat everyone on any safe they could order.  Strange because often I find everything there a little bit more expensive.  I have a Cannon 28 gun and a Winchester 28 gun. None of them will hold the amount of guns they claim without beating and scratching your guns all up. The Winchester I think is made by Liberty; I can't remember.  Anyway the Winchester is by far the heavier of the two.  The bolts in the door are almost twice as large and there are more of them. The Cannon uses inside hinges which I don't like because you can't open the door as wide as the Winchester.  I'm sure  there are better safes than the Winchester but for what I paid for it, I couldn't find anything comparable. The Winchester comes with pockets already installed in the door. On most safes this is a $89-100 add on.  The Cannons are made in Mexico and the Winchesters are made in China.  Who would have thought the Chinese safe would be better but it is?

If you got the cash pendleton safes are supposed to be some of the best.

A friend of mind had bought a bank safe off a guy that bought old safes from banks and turned them into gun safes. The safe was huge. It is a walk in safe, and the door is probably heavier than most gun safes. He had to knock part of his basement wall out to get it inside. Something most sane people wouldn't do.
