WHAT DO YOU OWN THAT IS EXPENDABLE ?
« on: January 01, 2013, 01:30:44 AM »
I have a number of guns that I don't shoot very often but that is not what the discussion is about.
I have two guns that I would trade in a hearbeat with a good offering---and I like the guns--well one of them, anyway.
One that fer sure is not a keeper is one that bedsdown underthe matress & the other is one that I am just tired of.
Sig 239 & S&W 340PD.
Now don't start a trade on this thing boys---we're just talking about the subject.
Blessings

Willie:  I consider my Tokarev to be expendable - that is, if I ever have to use a handgun to defend the homestead the one I would miss the least wouold be the Tokarev.  However, saying that I want ya to know that I would go right out and purchase another one in a heartbeat.  I paid less than $100 for mine when I first got it in 7.62x25mm with a 38 Super spare barrel.  Since I have added a 9mm barrel to the pile of spare parts for the Tok I wouldn't want it all to go to waste without another pistol, if I had to lose the first one.......

Maybe my Airweight 38 Snubbie, but I would get another one of those real quick though.  If I had to lose my lightweight Colt Commander I would strip it for parts first and then replace it with a Smtih and Wesson Scandium frame 4" 1911 (same size as the Commander).

Nothing else that I can think of right yet though...........

Funny, the P-239 would be about the last I would trade.

The SP-2340 however, is the one I would least miss. The thing is it's probably my best shooter. The girl is just to fat for stuff. I can't take her out to a nice place cuz she's too fat for about any pretty holster to fit. I can barely stuff her into my pants cuz she's too fat. But I can wrap my hands around her and she feels good and will do about anything I ask her to do  ;) .  So she's like a mini bike, fun as can be, but basically useless to me. So we'll go fishing once in a while ( mostly ice fishing, cuz she's so fat ), we go walking in the woods too,  where  I don't figure genteel society will see us.

A few years ago I wentr through my collection and trimmed it.
I also had a few people go shopping in my collection.
One Uncle has a M28 another has a Sig Pro in 40 (I like mine) and my father took my P230 as a CCW gun for himself.
With that said, I do still have a few guns I do not use but would think twice about selling or trading them.
I keep a S&W M65 in the house as home protection and a S&W 642 in the car.
If I ever had to use either to defend my self I know I would not be getting either back in a long time here in the DPRC and consider them to be expendable to save my life.

Most of my guns are expendable in the sense that most are not that rare and could be replaced relatively easily if I had to.   I like all that I have  and I don't have any that I'm looking to trade off at the moment.

In fact I've only ever traded off one gun, a Taurus M94 .22  that I traded toward a Ruger MII target.  The cylinder gap was too tight on it and it would start to bind after shooting several cylinder fulls.  If it weren't for that I would have kept it too.  It was a nice handling, accurate little gun.

Mikey I have one of those S&W Scandium 1911 full size and when I got it I thought I would carry it more but I just dont I find myself using the 3in colt defender or one of my sig 239 for a carry gun in the real hot summer I tend to go to the kel-tec P9, I go thru the safes from time to time and fondle some of the handguns to see if any lends itself to being sent down the road but havent lost that much of my mind yet.  Jim

Jim:  thansk.  I've had my eye on one of the S&W Scandiums for a while and have read lots of good stuff about them but have not yet heard from any one who owns and shoots one.  How does it feel to you weight-wise, and how does she shoot?

Every firearm I owned has been expedable the last few years.   I had way too many, still do.

One species has evolved into obese cranial fatheads with thin skin in comparison that whines about anything and everything as their shield against their environment. Meus

About the only thing id consider parting with right now is my ar10. Its a tack driver and a good reliable gun but its just on the heavy side to carry in the woods. I thought about putting it on the block now that there about worth there weight in gold but ive got probably 3k of loaded ammo for it and its bought and paid for and talked myself right out of it.

I have two possibilities:
Ruger BH 7.5" in .357 Why, because it is heavy and too big for my hands. I now have an Uberti El Patron in Colt 45 that shoots great and fits my hand much better and is just about as accurate.

Bulgarian Mak 9x18 Why, the only real reason is 57 year old eyes and those really small sights. Otherwise I really like it but is a bit big for CC.

I spent the last seveal years slimming down my inventory to what I figured I would let go, so nothing here as of now. I plan on adding a couple things in the next few months. I do have some ammo that is expendable though. I have ammo that I do not have guns for.

Not to be negative, but I don't have anything not expendable.  I'm pretty much all done.  Recent developments have assured me that life is not only short, but useless.  I had a good career, I helped some folks out of bad times, I've damaged the source of evil in some cases, but in the end, my efforts, or your efforts, do not come to much.  I have some firearms; sometimes I get them out and wipe them down or take them to the range, but I've found that guns are a small part of our existence.  We should give them no importance.  Neither are our rights to own them so very important.
I ain't done yet, but nearly so.

Mike you are sounding negative. Do you have some sort of impending medical condition or a loss that
would make you feel this way ? Because from how you have explained your life it would seem like
you are a great asset to those around you. You certainly are to us here on this site .

Already trimmed my inventory. Sold 3 on GBO. 2 to friends and gave my SIL one. I just didn't need them any more. I have 5 that will never go. A Vanduard in 270 Win.  and a Rem. Wingmaster. These were gifts from my now deceased wife. Also have 2 rems. and 1 winchester 22's that will not go. 1 rem. was my fathers first 22 the other was my grandfathers and the win. was my first ever gun. After my wife passed i have given away more stuff than some people will ever own. ;D   Why keep it if you don't need or use it.

I really only have 4/5 that I feel expendable.
The 239 is in .40 with a .357sig barrel---I f I could get a 9mm barrel I would do it--but my understanding is the 9mm takes some adjustments to the gun + mags and mags right now are really expensive.
I do carry the 239 a lot and it sure fits that bill. I dunno. But the matress gun is really expendable.
I am doing a deal on aM28 as we speak---wasn't looking but the price is too good and it has some wear which makes it a good slave + 28's are good slaves and make excellent matress guns.
I want to get rid of and keep finding   >:(
Speaking of rollers and 28's---they are good solid no frills guns.
Blessings

I do have two Smith's in .327 mag and one that is expendable--the other would become the matress gun.
How I came about two is just a tale of lust over good sense---long story but poor choice. Not my first--won't be my last   :-[ >:( :)
I have learned not to get too excited about bad thinking.

I just can't go here.....I could give you a wish list of what I've sold and wish I had back.  I do think that when AR's become available again (and I believe they will)...any of my AR's are expendable.

Well I'm in a situation right now where I have been thinking about the same thing. What do I have I can live without well, I have a zastava M92 Krink pistol, my AR15 (going to keep the AR10) and a Hollywood Gunshop turret press. i'm looking to get back t the long range game and am selling all of these to buy a savage 110 in 338 lapua and put a new furnace in my house.

Nothing more hopefully.  I've already wittled down to the items passed on from my Dad.  Watch out for the AR10 platform, nice weapon,.....it does not like the cheaper ammo in my experience.

WHAT DO YOU OWN THAT IS EXPENDABLE?

Just about everything. We as individuals have pretty well forgotten how little we really need. In WWI, the bolt action rifle and bayonet won that war. In WWII, a 10 shot clip fed semi-auto weighin in at just over 10 rounds, and a bayonet won that war.
Then America went to a box magazine 20 rd rifle weighing about 11 lbs, and then to a 30 rd box fed rifle, and weighing half that, and neither has won a war since WWII.
It isn't nearly as much as the tool, but more about the application of that tool.
I sold a bunch of mine off over the last several years. If it ever comes to what the title of this thread implies, a bunch of guns will be more of a liability than a help.

Mikey the S&W Scandium shoots well enough, better than I can ring out of it, and weight wise I like it, however I always carry IWB and it being full size I just cant seem to get used to that extra 1 in. on it, I do have a Colt stainless commander and on occasion do carry it but when it is for a 1911 carry I usually carry the Colt defender, I really like the Sig 239 for a CCW handgun have 2 of them, but the best shooting handgun I have is a sig 229 in .40S&W but I hate to carry it as a CCW.  If you ever get into Central Arkansas call and you can come out to the place and try it out hell you might like it better than I do.  Jim

Ok, I missed the boat first time. Pistols! That's the thread and forum. I sold all but the two I carry regularly, both same make (Glock), and both same caliber. A 27, and a 23. I also kept a 22 cal. pistol. That's it. The rest are gone.

I have a stainless Ultimate Shadow Model 70 in 7mm-08 but I have no love for the caliber.  I wish I could get what I spent for it.

Swampy you missed the point like I did. This is a handgun forum, and a thread about expendable handguns. I'm old and slow to catch on. What's your excuse?

Dee I respect your opinion but i dont understand how having to many guns is a liability. I can agree with your point that someone good with a gun is better armed even with a single shot rifle then an idiot with an ar is but I just dont see any senerio where having to many guns is a liability. They may not be nessesary or needed but hardly a liability.

Lloyd, I took the title to mean that if your environment changed, whether economic, or social, what could you do without. I'm never sure where William is heading with a thread until half way thru. If either of the changes I mentioned here were to occur, then maintenance, and security, problems could, and most likely WOULD occur.
As I have gotten older, I have become more interested in what I can reasonably USE, as opposed to what I want. As a result of my thinking changing with age, I WANT less, and look at the more practical side of possession regarding firearms, and other things.
Another example was when the 2010 Chevy Silverados came out I told my wife I was gonna go get me one. I did, and almost 4 years later, it had barely 9,000 miles on it. It would sit in the carport for a month at a time without being driven. It made no sense, so I sold it. I also like guitars, but I only have three, and two are endanger of new homes, as I play mostly acoustic. My son, and a couple of friends want me to exchange my Vulcan 1600 Classic for a Harley, but the quality for the money makes no sense.
I have taught my children all their lives, that money and possessions are not signs of success in life, as I have never seen an armored car in a funeral possession, or a luggage rack on a hearse. I will take a good rep over money, and possessions any time.
HOWEVER. If owning a lot of guns, collecting guns, or butterflies for that matter is your hobby, then by all means, get out the gun oil, or the net. I don't condemn it, I just grew away from it myself. Sorry for the confusion.
You may all go to hell, I will go to Texas. Davy Crockett
