First rule of gun collecting don't sell nothing.
Second rule of gun collecting see rule one.

I do have an old Spanish mouser that was converted to .308 I don't really need but it was cheep and in a few years they will be selling double what I paid for it. Decided to go ahead and get or regret it later.

Remember that old Mini-14 you sold because you could not hit a pie plate at 100 yards? Now they are selling for over $1200.

I'm not a gun collector (but I do believe thats probably as good a place to invest money as any) but I am a gun owner..I remember that Mini you're talking about. Gave it to my brother..don't miss it abit..(that 1200 bucks in my pocket you allude to sounds pretty good though). Expendable...hmmm, Miroku 1886 SRC 45-70, couple original Vaqueros, Remington model 700 all weather rifle in 243, lets see, couple nice Mares, oh sorry, guns only  :-[  thats about it I think.....maybe one of my model 97's.......I said maybe....

my guns and loading gear are my wifes insurance policy. Probably a better investment then even gold in these times. Heck ive got mags i paid 20 bucks for that are going for a 150 right now. I too did get rid of alot of stuff i didnt really use or need though. I used to have two 4 wheelers, a side by side, a streat bike and two snomombiles. All are gone now. Just my truck and jeep and the wifes car left. Just couldnt see having all the crap in my way when i probably put 200 miles a peice on them a year. that said i dont think id care to get down to 4 or 5 guns. Its been my passion all my life and what i spend most of my time doing. Without it id be one of those retired people who sat on the couch and died.

had that theroy when i was young and had about 10 guns. Found out over the years my tastes change about like the seasons. One year i may be into 22s the next big bore sixguns and the next bolt rifles. I could never afford to buy every single gun i wanted so selling and trading got to be a regular thing. Sure ive regretted a couple but for the most part would have missed out on lots of enjoyment if i would have never parted with any of them to aquire others. I love my son, wife and dog, Not a piece of steel and wood. Make me the right offer on any of them that werent passed down by family members and they can reside at your home.

Thinned the safe over the past two years.  Now all my guns have a purpose and all my purposes have a gun.   Since the trim I haven't missed out on any hunting for lack of the right gun nor missed any game due to the gun being wrong.  SD / HD are well covered.  Life is simpler. There are a couple wants but no rush or need to fill them.

Horses, simillar story, have 3, "need" 2.  My kid moved out, working and going to school in town so she doesn't have the time to ride like she used to.   As a result there is a very nice Polish Arabian for sale.  When he is sold we'll still have a good saddle horse and a good work horse, life will be simpler.

I have sold and junked a lot of stuff over the past two years that when considered was found to be expendable.   How much of it have I missed?

Likewise on thinning out the collection...I've sold or traded almost everything that doesn't use .45ACP/.45C.  That has drastically reduced my reloading chores and I still shoot whenever I want.

In fact, I just counted and half the items in my safe are being stored for family members.

Likewise on the family souvenirs...anything of mine that isn't "handed-down" status is expendable.  Wish I'd waited on the mini-14, though.

I no longer have any of the "family heirlooms" that were handed down to me (there were only a few from my Father and Grandfather)...I only have one son and one nephew that I'm close to so all those have already been handed down..my Grandsons can get my "hand me downs".  I'm with Lloyd on the things I truly care about, guns are tools to me (obviously I like and enjoy them, but I certainly don't "love" them {am kinda fond of a couple of em'though  :) } and I don't refer to them by gender or give them names....sometimes "wanting" isn't the same as "having"..

T-reg....two ain't enough, a guy needs at least three (I have six) good riding horse and two pack horses...no mules..

When the bottom dropped out in 08' I sold a bunch of my pistols. I didn't think they or any of my collection was expendable but I realized quick that they were. I sold the pretty ones and the antique ones. The oddities and the high end. I kept what made sense to me, the tiny AA .22 that wasn't worth enough to sell. The bersa .380 that shoots too well, never jams and also wasn't worth enough to sell. The glock .22. because its awesome. The rest were expendable.  I only miss my 317 camp airweight .22,, but only when I think about it.  J

Expendable i'm not sure what is really expendable.  When i see models being discontinued more and more.  Some collect just to collect and not all of them get shot.  So some collectors are hoarders i guess.   I have been thinking about thinning the herd in some spots.   Probably my tokarev's.

Lloyd, I took the title to mean that if your environment changed, whether economic, or social, what could you do without. I'm never sure where William is heading with a thread until half way thru. If either of the changes I mentioned here were to occur, then maintenance, and security, problems could, and most likely WOULD occur.
As I have gotten older, I have become more interested in what I can reasonably USE, as opposed to what I want. As a result of my thinking changing with age, I WANT less, and look at the more practical side of possession regarding firearms, and other things.
Another example was when the 2010 Chevy Silverados came out I told my wife I was gonna go get me one. I did, and almost 4 years later, it had barely 9,000 miles on it. It would sit in the carport for a month at a time without being driven. It made no sense, so I sold it. I also like guitars, but I only have three, and two are endanger of new homes, as I play mostly acoustic. My son, and a couple of friends want me to exchange my Vulcan 1600 Classic for a Harley, but the quality for the money makes no sense.
I have taught my children all their lives, that money and possessions are not signs of success in life, as I have never seen an armored car in a funeral possession, or a luggage rack on a hearse. I will take a good rep over money, and possessions any time.
HOWEVER. If owning a lot of guns, collecting guns, or butterflies for that matter is your hobby, then by all means, get out the gun oil, or the net. I don't condemn it, I just grew away from it myself. Sorry for the confusion.

good post. we often want a lot of what we dont need.and thats what overextends us.contentment is the key. be happy with what yu have.if your feeding good, warm and dry!yu are better off than most of the world.not to say yu shud not werk to make your situation better. i do it everyday.

Well no, I do admit to being a poor commuicator, you can see that by the number of misspellings and incomplete or run on senteces-----such as this one  ;) .
I have two at present which are one the edge of being expendable. One is a Sig 239 and a S&W snubby---they just do n't seem to fit in, anymore, with my thought pattern.
I might opt for an even up trade for a Sig 9mm but I really and not sure about that.
Another .45 might be good but I am kinda looking at a M625 in LC--at any rate, the swap would have to be even up.
Blessings

Back in the days when I setup at several guns shows. I would always have guns around that I used for trading fodder. Ones that didn't fit into what I was keeping for myself, but I knew I could make money on. Those days are long gone and most of my collection these days are ones that I have decided to keep. I do however have a pair of Baby Eagles (old model) in .45 and 9mm. If I had to make a choice the 9mm would go. I have a few T/C Contender barrels, but those probably only count as half a gun.  LOL

Expendable?? Again I'm not sure what I would part with. I stashed away many cans of the 7,62x25 tok ammo. I think I have most of the countries who manufactured the toks too. Think albout it with six pocket pants you could carry 6 toks. I think I'll let the kids sort them out after I'm gone.

Really every time I part with something I regret it. If I was taking one with me when I retire(die) it would be my 1907 Swede mauser.
