I need to remove lube from bullets
« on: January 01, 2013, 03:58:31 AM »
I've got several hundred commercial cbs that were in
a tornado. The boxes were ripped open and dumped out
in the dirt and mud. They have the normal looking
commercial blue hard lube.
The problem is that now most have dirt imbedded in the lube.
I'd like to heat them in the oven to melt off the lube
and dirt then relube
How high a temp can I go without hurting the lead ?
They are all plain based. I've got 250gr 45 Colt ,
230gr 45ACP , and 160gr 30-30.
I've cleaned out an old sizer in the oven and just kept
bumping up the temp till the lube ran out.
But I'm not sure how high I'll have to go to get the
lube to run out of the grooves.
Any suggestions ?
Thanks
Dagalee

Have you thought about goin to WalMart and buyin a cheap gallon of laquer thinner, and just puttin'em in a can of that? Won't take long, and the bullets will not be affected at all.

Few if any lead alloys will melt below 400 degrees.

Put them in a pan of boiling water, when the lube melts off set the pan aside to cool, take the lube cookie off the top of the pan, dump your bullets out to dry.
In the 1920's "sheeple" was a term coined by the National Socialist Party in Germany to describe people that would not vote for Hitler. In the 1930's they held Hitler as the only one that would bring pride back to Germany and bring the budget and economy back.....

I purchaded 500 bullets with some black goo in the lube grooves, may have been bullet lube, but it didn't work very well. I put a couple layers of paper towel in a pan and set the bullets base down on the towel. 200 degrees for mebbe 15 minutes in my toaster oven did the job. No, the paper didn't ignite and cleanup was easy, just toss the paper towels. I prefer this to a solvent dunk/soak...

+1 , I've done this many times when changing lubes in my Lyman 450,s , just get it hot enough to boil the lube out and then let cool , the cookie comes off with no problems and the water is still warm enough that the sizer dries with no rusting at all .

Wife will be at work tomorrow - good time to borrow
the kitchen.
Will prolly wipe down with solvent to be sure and
remove all the grit.
