Went to Anchorage this week.  Checked out the new store in the old K-Mart bldg in the Diamond area (Sportsman's Warehouse).  Prices were pretty good on Sporting Goods a lot better than Fairbanks.  But the real thing was for the Wife, She bought the same blouses and sweaters she had been looking at in Fairbanks.  Woolrich brand for half price compared to that big clothing store there in Fairbanks.  The store just opened monday.  Be nice to get something like that in Fairbanks.

I have been watching the reports on the forums.  It seems like AK finally has a true sporting goods store of major size.  As I posted on the AK Hunting forum, I can drive the 700 miles, stay in a hotel for a night, shop and still save money.  I will probably be over at the end of the month to see it.  

I need more money just in case! :grin:

Ever see snowflakes as bif as half-dollars --------- I can just see the road 300 feet away from the house right now.

Just went in to check it out, had a lot of stuff that seemed to have pretty good prices, I like it because you can almost find everything you need, instead of running here and there for something, wonder if the place is going to put the hurt on Mountain View sports. Just found this site and was reading some of the old post and now I'm itching to go spring bear hunting.

I conveniently had a conference and meetings in Anchorage last week just when the store was opening.  It looks like most of the things I would order from Cabela's, et al I can now get at SW.  I managed to escape the store after spending about $100.   I easily could have spent 5 times that or more!

AKPLS:  You got out easy.  I went down to watch my son's school hockey team play in the state playoffs.  They were the defending state champions.  They finished third this year.  They are real disappointed.  Anyway my wife spent over $200.00 on herself, for blouses and vest to wear to work, and leasure.  I got the more serious stuff, like a new boat anchor, white camo, archery supplies, and a new tent for an upcoming float trip.   Alot better than having to order it through the mail, or the 100% markup here in Fairbanks.

Now if they could just get an online catalouge.....that way I could find everything I want and make a list, so when I go into the city I wont forget anything. They do have a website and contact info. www.sportsmanswarehouse.com  They will answer E-mail to let you know if they have a specific item.

I finally made it in last week, fortunately for my marriage I didn't have any money on me ;)  The have a great selection and great prices.  I have a feeling I'll be getting quite a few items to outfit my boat there, not to mention powder, fishing needs etc.  A big boys toy store for sure!

I bet come October, they could re-name it PFD warehouse  :)

Do they carry shrimp pots at all? :roll:

I wonder if they will cater to the Alaskan needs or the available items from the suppliers in the lower 48 stores.

Dave,

They do have some shrimp and crab pots, but they aren't set up for our use, ie the biodegradable thread.  My buddy rated their pots as lower 48 crap, and suggested getting good pots from B&J commercial.

They may not have everything you want there, but the selection and low prices blow away most everything else in town.  Think of Mountain View Sporting Goods selection, but with prices at or lower then WalMart.

There are some really good pots available in Seattle but the cost of shipping is prohibitive.

We found this summer that the cone shaped collaspible pots with nylon mesh worked superior to the poly coated steel.  We have a requirement over here for a 7/8 opening on the steel.  The mesh has a much looser restriction for some reason.

I would love to get hold of the cone shaped ones. I lost three pots to a thief over here last spring and need to replace them.

Dave,

Too bad about your pots.  I know what you mean about the shipping from Seattle, I looked into getting some pots and the shipping was more than the pots.  One of those deals where if you order enough of them, then shipping gets reasonable.  When I shipped up the plywood for the boat I'm building, it was $180 for 800#'s of wood, not that bad all things considered.  If you could get a group order together, then you could probably have it sent up at a reasonable rate.

You should give B&J a ring, they're the only place in town that would carry the right stuff.
